Don't trip, but if you do, have a good one!
PATRYCH--Joseph, (1955-2023), one of classical music's busiest record producers and sound engineers, died December 18, 2023. Born to Holocaust survivors, he was the eldest of three siblings, his brother Martin (z"l) and his sister Cindy. Joe was a leading authority on the piano with an encyclopedic knowledge of its vast repertoire and history of performances. A fixture of New York's concert scene, he was a friend and advisor to many pianists in the last 50 years. Patrych Sound Studios was a top-of-the-line audio and video workshop where he produced and engineered recordings for labels including BIS, BMG, Bridge, Centaur, and Hyperion. He provided recording services throughout the United States, designing and building archival and recording studios for Harvard University, the International Piano Archives at Maryland, and others. Joe was honest and direct, able to relate to any person from every walk of life. He possessed a distinctively positive and uplifting, yet forthright, aura. Z"l

I've had much to say, but couldn't bring myself to write the words, and now, unbelievably, almost an entire year has passed. Ashley and I miss you dearly. You were one-of-a-kind, and we feel your absence. xoxo

The loss of Joe is truly one of the most difficult things to bear. What a gentle soul who brought true life to the world of the piano. Sharing his humor, his prodigious knowledge and his warmth, he was a friend to so many who adored him. We all will miss you Joe!

I knew Joe starting in about 1980 because his birthday and mine were two days apart, and we found ourselves sharing birthday dinners and other celebrations with mutual friends that continued a couple of times a year until 2023. The celebrations were dominated by pianists, and although I'm not one, they were always joyous and convivial. I am a conductor specializing in Gilbert & Sullivan operas, and there are complete performances with orchestra of most of the G&S operas on my YouTube channel. In March 2023, I produced and conducted THE YEOMEN OF THE GUARD in Manhattan, and I was delighted when Joe told me that he had the afternoon free in his busy schedule to make the video of the performance. Remember Joe Patrych, shared December 21, 2023 Joe Patrych, recording engineer and artistic director of Sunday Evenings at Klavierhaus, breathed New York piano recitals. He knew everyone and what they played in what year. I was talking to Joe last Saturday just before his heart attack. While he felt concerned about his health, he spoke with such energy and clarity that I did not see this coming. On our last ride home from Klavierhaus, Joe wanted me to hear on YouTube a secret recording of Shura Cherkassky's Chopin Op. 2 at Carnegie Hall in 1993. We were actually both in that audience, but it wasn't until my undergrad years at Juilliard that we met. When I moved back to NYC during the pandemic, he had remembered my William Kapell win in Baltimore, and we picked up on his storytelling and our shared passion for live performance. At the same time, Sujatri Riesinger had invited me to be artist in residence at Klavierhaus, which Joe had lovingly outfitted with the latest audio/visual and livestreaming equipment with sound engineer James Wu. Recently, I shared his remastered recording of Horowitz playing the Liszt Sonata at Carnegie Hall in 1978 with my online Conscious Listening™ Café. Joe had told me that because his recording company had already recorded that piece, they did not want to spend more money to record the concert. Compare this wild abandon onstage to the manicured studio recording, and we hear how these incredible stolen moments of history challenge what we think is possible. Joe was going to present my recital and then lecture at my Find Your Flow piano intensive at Klavierhaus this March. His topic was on how recordings have shaped piano performance. We were going to be co-conspirators in getting people to listen more carefully, more deeply. With his passing, my community has lost a vital link in the continuity of music history in New York City. He cared deeply about music and invested fully in the future of young pianists. He will be missed.

Dearest Joe - You were the intrepid friend of all things piano! You were at every piano concert I ever attended in NYC. You were always there - with your boundless enthusiasm, love for music, and your huge heart - you touched us all. You left us way too soon - but we know that you are still with us, because we simply can't let you go. Rest in eternal peace, good friend, and know how much you are loved and missed.
