Recuerdos

"After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music." - Aldous Huxley James H. Sralla passed away on April 2, 2020 due to complications related to liver failure. Jamie, as he was known, was a manager at the Resale Barn in El Campo, which he operated with his parents. He was born in Houston in 1973 and was an avid skateboarder and music lover, attending hundreds, if not thousands, of concerts and playing multiple instruments himself, including drums, guitar, piano, and trumpet. In his twenties, he started his own recording studio, Static House, and recorded and mixed albums for many bands over the following decades. As a long time employee of Cactus Records, he influenced the music Houstonians heard and the musicians who visited for in-store concerts. The Houston Press published some of his musings on the Texas music scene. Life-long struggles with obsessive compulsive disorder and depression put some gaps in his recording career and sent him to El Campo for stability, to work with his folks. There he didn't have as many friends, but he knew some good people and lived close to extended family. Before his death, he was putting pen to paper about his time spent recording in Houston. He was known in the Houston music community as a talented audio engineer, live soundman, and occasional road manager, but also as a kind, quiet guy with a sense of humor. He is survived by his parents James and Jeanne Sralla of Danevang, Texas, who have taken custody of Jamie's dog Dolly, his sister Joni Sralla Miller of Annapolis, Maryland, her husband Rick, and his niece, Chloe, and nephew, James.

Jamie, To me you were always a shy, quiet, gentle, yet genuine and humorous person. I knew you incidentally in band as one of the cool kids (for band) and through hanging out with your sister. Your bond with her was clear and evident and that made me really like you, and makes me miss you all the more now. You never put on false airs and you always appeared to wear your soul on your sleeve. Regretfully I only get to know you better after your passing; you seemed to carry my impression of you into adulthood and that makes me regret your passing all the more. Nonetheless I will always remember you as someone who was cool beyond measure, a loving brother to your sister, and a dearly loved son of your mom and dad.

I wishI had more photos to share of Jamie but I do have a lot of good memories of him. I met him the summer I came to stay with you all and really felt like you treated me like family. Jamie was super fun with cool music tastes and a dry sense of humor. Every timeI came back to visit I was always glad to see him and catch up on his latest musical endeavors. Now and again he would send me CDs he worked on and I still have them all. The last time I saw him in Houston was when he set up my band with a show and gave us a place to crash. And the last time I talked to him he had yet another musical project to share. I'll miss him and I wish he was still with us. Keep on rocking, Jamie.

So nice to see all of the shared photos, wish I had more pictures to add. I don't think anyone had a bigger impact on my life than Jamie, feel so lucky to have had such a wonderful friend. Sending love to the Sralla family, and thinking of the good times on his birthday.

I was a senior when I met Jaime as a freshman in the band as a fellow drummer. The first pic is of Jamie at a restaurant after our X-mas concert. The next two are of my senior graduation party. I loved Jamie and the other drummers so much as this pic shows me with him, Gregg and Kelby, my life long friend Vanessa and my longtime girlfriend, Kerri. The last pic is also from the X-mas concert. I remember going over to Jamie's house and jamming as we had a short lived band, the Banana Machineguns. Although, most of you know he was much more serious about music than I was. With fond memories of Jamie and prayers to his family. I hope we can celebrate his life in the future.

Happy Birthday Brother, and rest in peace. The Miller's don't have a big family so I was so lucky to have met Joni and to become a part of yours. We always had a blast hanging out whether down in TX or when you came to visit up in MD. I regret not having to got to know you even better, but I guess I thought we would have more time. Seeing everyone's posts and memories makes me realize how many stories of yours I hadn't heard, and how many cool people you connected with over the years. RIP Jamie, love you.
