Recuerdos

His knowledge reached people for decades.

Guy Clyde Conti was born on March 9, 1942, in the Pittsburgh area of Pennsylvania and raised in Freeport, PA — a small river town that shaped a big personality. From his earliest days, Guy was drawn to sports and competition, and that fire never left him. He attended Clarion State College, where he played baseball as a catcher and suited up for football, before earning a master's degree from West Virginia University. A brief professional baseball career with the Houston Colt .45's minor league system ended when a shoulder injury cut short his playing days — but it only redirected his gifts toward something even more enduring: coaching. Guy began his coaching life at Northwestern High School in Albion, Pennsylvania, guiding young athletes in football and baseball through the late 1960s and early 1970s. From 1975 to 1984, he served as head basketball coach at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, compiling a 140–98 record and leading his teams to two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division titles. The 1981–82 squad reached the NCAA Division II tournament with a 22–8 record — a milestone he called "a dream fulfilled." He was inducted into Edinboro's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997, and into the Erie Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. His path into professional baseball began with the Pittsburgh Pirates in the early 1980s before he joined the Los Angeles Dodgers organization in 1986 as a roving minor league pitching coach. It was there that Guy Conti changed baseball history — quietly, the way he did most things. A young pitcher named Pedro Martinez arrived from the Dominican Republic, raw and brilliant, unable yet to speak English. Guy and his wife Jan took Pedro in like family, driving him to flea markets on weekends, sharing meals, and teaching him English word by word. Jan, a high school librarian, gave Pedro two or three words each morning; by afternoon, he had mastered them. Guy helped refine the changeup grip that would become one of the most devastating pitches in the game. Pedro Martinez later called him "White Daddy" — and said, "I was so happy that I had someone who wanted to be with me. Guy was really like a father to me then." Guy joined the New York Mets organization in 1999, ultimately serving as bullpen coach under manager Willie Randolph from 2005 to 2008, then as a senior adviser, rehabilitation coordinator, and spring training coordinator for nearly two more decades. Known for arriving first and leaving last, for fierce determination and a generous heart, and for having more stories than anyone in baseball, Guy Conti leaves behind a legacy woven through generations of players, coaches, and fans. He is survived by his beloved wife Jan of 65 years, their four children — Kim, Curt, Craig, and Kelly — seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. He passed away on October 13, 2026, in Vero Beach, Florida, at age 84.

We lost a good one today. Guy Conti, our former bullpen coach and special adviser, passed away after a lengthy illness. Guy was a friend of Sandy Koufax and beloved by Pedro Martínez. No one had more stories than Guy. His knowledge reached people for decades. Miss you my friend.
