Anthony Richard Chiang

February 14th, 1965 - April 3rd, 2023
Anthony Chiang was born on February 14, 1965 in Oakland, California. He and his family lived in Oakland and then San Francisco for a time before moving to Hercules in 1976. The youngest of five brothers, Anthony set himself apart by being brash and bold. He loved comic books, movies and video games and was able to turn his passions into a career. While attending Pinole Valley High School in the early 80’s, he founded The Chiang Brothers Software company, coding video games on the family Apple II computer as a hobby. Many of the games were published on SoftDisk, a pre-internet computing magazine distributed on floppy disks.
While majoring in English at U.C. Berkeley, Anthony parlayed his SoftDisk connections into an internship at their Shreveport, Louisiana office. There, he had found his calling, and upon his return to the Bay Area (Albany, CA) he became a 3D Modeler/Art Technician for several video game developers including Spectrum HoloByte, LucasArts, and Nihilistic. He is credited with work on 25 games including Falcon 3.0, Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, Starcraft: Ghost, and Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects. A full list of game credits is available at https://www.mobygames.com/person/1819/anthony-chiang/.
Never afraid to take on new challenges, Anthony in 2010 literally moved around the world to begin work as a layout director in the visual effects industry, starting at Weta Digital in Wellington, New Zealand where he contributed on several blockbusters including X-Men: First Class, The Avengers, The Hobbit series, Iron Man 3, and the Planet of the Apes series. Following his time at Weta, he worked a stint at Mill Film in Adelaide, South Australia, before moving to Montreal, Canada in 2019 to work at Mr. X, Scanline VFX, and then Framestore. His full movie credits are listed on his IMDB page: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm4897221/.
In between work, Anthony loved to travel and explore the world, but always made time to meet up with friends and spend holidays with his family. He maintained a vast comic book collection, was a solid ringer on movie trivia night, and enjoyed cheering on all the Bay Area sports teams. Anthony passed away unexpectedly in Montreal on April 3, 2023, at the age of 58. He was predeceased by his parents Tit and May Chiang. He is survived by his brothers Raymond (Vivian), John, Samuel, and Kenneth (Trudy); nephew Zachary; nieces Samantha and Chloe; stepsister Maggie (Peter); and stepmother Hai Yan.

I have only just recently heard of Anthony's passing and am shocked to hear of the news. I had the pleasure of working with him at Scanline VFX. He had a young spirit and was a wise man. May your soul be resting in a better place Ant.

I heard of Anthony’s passing and I am shocked and saddened by the news. I met Anthony while interning for the Canadian Consulate in San Francisco back in 2001. I had the good fortune of being his house mate for a two month stay and he was just the nicest guy. On the weekends, he took me sightseeing around San Francisco and I have fond memories of visiting Napa Valley and Stanford. After leaving the Bay Area, we kept in touch. He travelled to see me in London, England when I was studying there. We were fans of the royal family and when the Queen Mum passed, went to see the procession. I remember fondly that he told me I was the one that inspired him to travel and leave his comfort zone, lol - not sure whether it was true or not but it was touching to hear. One year, we went to Vegas together, and saw a Cirque du Soleil show and he treated my friends out to dinner. Anthony went to my wedding in Toronto, and throughout the years we always tried to meet up even though he lived halfway around the world. The last time I saw him was last summer. He had come to Toronto for the weekend and we had a great time strolling through the city’s historic distillery district and the beaches. Two months later, I was in Montreal with my family. He took a day off work and happily went to the Children’s museum (!) with my two kids, and we later went to a bbq restaurant that he was raving about. My last memory was of him bringing Montreal style bagels to our hotel room the morning we were leaving. He went to the bakery at 7am and trekked across town to make sure that we had a bag of the best bagels he had ever tasted to take home for the road. He then went to work. I will always remember how kind, selfless and generous he was, how he was an encyclopedia of pop culture, and knew something about everything. He always cared to do the right thing and always thought of the little guy. I will miss him forever…

This a small tribute to my friend Anthony Chiang thanks to ACM SIGGRAPH Pioneers and Ed Kramer, who creates the reel out of a labor of love. Played in front of Hall of Fame Computer Graphic Pioneers. Jim Blinn, James D. Foley, Andries van Dam, and Ed Catmull to name a few, are the ones that I recognized. Probably others in attendance that have worked behind the scenes, like Anthony, on countless projects. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Nz0PJ5VY3t3VQYSxIUf9up17UpcsbQn_/view?usp=drive_link

So heartbreaking to hear that Anthony has passed. I will miss his friendliness, warmth and openness to connect and help in any way. He took a few of us vfx newbies under his wing back in 2015 which meant so much and made a huge difference starting out in a big studio (and not really knowing what to do). I will never forget one time when Dr. Dre's "The Next Episode" blared out of his speakers as he frantically tried to mute it. He was silent for a second, then we all laughed. I'll miss that infectious laugh! We also had spontaneous lunch hangouts talking about comics, Marvel, travel and of course the NBA and his Bay Area Warriors. "I am not a bandwagoner, I am an O.G.!" May you rest in peace, Anthony. You will always be a legend and an inspiration.
