Recuerdos

A dedicated champion of social justice, remembered for his decency and his unwavering commitment to the people of Rugby.

Andrew "Andy" King was a steadfast champion of social justice and a dedicated public servant whose life in politics was rooted in genuine care for the people he represented. Born on 14 September 1948, Andy came of age as part of a generation that believed in the power of community and the obligation to fight for those left behind. Before entering Parliament, he worked as a postman and mechanic — trades that kept him grounded in the rhythms of working life — before forging a career as a social services manager, a role that would shape every conviction he carried into Westminster. Educated at Coatbridge Technical College and Hatfield Polytechnic, Andy built a career defined by service rather than ambition. In the landmark 1997 general election that swept New Labour into government, he was elected Member of Parliament for Rugby and Kenilworth, narrowly defeating Conservative incumbent Jim Pawsey. He served his constituents with distinction from 1 May 1997 until 11 April 2005. His eight years in Parliament were marked by a fierce determination to improve the lives of ordinary people. Andy fought vigorously against the introduction of genetically modified crop trials in the Rugby area, ensuring the constituency was not designated as a test site. He campaigned tirelessly for jobs and training opportunities, playing a key role in helping to establish the Manufacturing Technology Centre in Ansty — a legacy that continued to benefit local workers and businesses long after his time in Parliament. Perhaps nowhere was his dedication more visible than in his relentless advocacy for Rugby's Hospital of St Cross, where he worked hard to protect local health services from cuts and closures. Those who knew Andy remembered him as accessible, decent, and genuinely committed — a politician whose background in social work meant that the fight against poverty and social exclusion was never abstract but deeply personal. His door was always open to constituents, and he listened with the patience of someone who understood what hardship truly looked like. After losing his seat to Jeremy Wright in 2005, Andy remained active as a local campaigner, continuing to advocate for the causes he believed in with the same quiet determination that had defined his public life. Andrew King passed away in October 2026, aged 78. His legacy of public service, compassion, and principled advocacy continues to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

I had the huge privilege of working for Andy in the constituency. For anyone involved in politics, being able to make a difference is something to be treasured, and Andy certainly did that. His background as a social worker meant his passion for social justice and fighting poverty underpinned everything he did.

As a local campaigner he fought against the introduction of GM modified crops and ensured that Rugby was not an area where they were trialled. As an MP during the last Labour government, he campaigned for jobs and training, which helped the establishment of the Manufacturing Technology Centre in Ansty. He worked hard to combat poverty and social exclusion, and fought to protect local health services such as those delivered from the Hospital of St Cross. His legacy of public service continues to inspire us all.
