She had the upper hand, and told it like it was — and perhaps there was always a little of that bossiness in her.

Stephanie Cole was one of Britain's most versatile and beloved actresses, a stage and television performer whose remarkable six-decade career was defined by wit, warmth, and an extraordinary gift for inhabiting formidable women of every age and temperament. Born Patricia Stephanie Cole on 5 October 1941 in Solihull, Warwickshire, she discovered her passion for the stage early, auditioning for Bristol Old Vic Theatre School at just fifteen and training there from 1958 to 1960. At seventeen — before her training was even complete — she stepped onto the stage to play Madame Arcati, the ninety-year-old medium in Noël Coward's Blithe Spirit. It was an audacious, prescient debut that foreshadowed a career in which she would perennially play characters decades older than herself. For twenty years after Bristol, Cole honed her craft in provincial repertory theatres across the United Kingdom, accumulating a depth of technique that would serve her when television finally came calling. Her breakthrough arrived with the BBC's acclaimed wartime drama Tenko (1981–1985), in which she played Dr Beatrice Mason — a stern yet compassionate doctor tending to British women imprisoned in a Japanese camp. The role brought her national recognition and established her as a performer of serious dramatic range. The decade that followed cemented her status as a national treasure of British comedy. She sparred memorably with Ronnie Barker as the formidable Mrs Delphine Featherstone in Open All Hours, and from 1990 to 1994 she brought fierce intelligence and blazing comic timing to Diana Trent, the sharp-tongued retired photojournalist at the centre of Waiting for God — a performance that earned her the 1992 British Comedy Award for Best TV Comedy Actress. Later came Joan Norton in Doc Martin, Carolyn Knapp-Shappey in the BBC Radio 4 sitcom Cabin Pressure, and Sylvia Goodwin in Coronation Street, the last of which won her the 2012 British Soap Award for Best Comedy Performance. Away from the screen, Cole was a tireless advocate for mental health charities and causes supporting the elderly, work recognised when she was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2005. She published her autobiography, A Passionate Life, in 1998, and received an honorary Master of Arts from the University of Bristol in 2002. Stephanie Cole lived with Alzheimer's disease for several years before her death on 18 September 2026, aged 84. She leaves behind her daughter, Emma Battcock, and the enduring memory of a career that brought joy, laughter, and genuine humanity to millions.

I remember the thrill that went around the building when everyone discovered Stephanie would be playing Roy Cropper's mum, Sylvia.
