She showed young Zimbabwean women that they belong at the highest levels of the game.

Sarah Dambanevana was a trailblazer in Zimbabwean cricket — a woman who gave everything to the sport first as a player and then as a pioneering match official, leaving the game richer for her presence. Born on 26 May 1990, she grew up to become one of the most significant figures in the history of women's cricket in Zimbabwe. Sarah represented the Zimbabwe women's cricket team as a right-arm fast medium bowler from 2009 to 2014, competing at the highest level and earning her place in the 2011 ICC Women's Cricket World Cup Qualifier. When her playing career drew to a close, she did not step away from cricket — she found a new way to serve it. Channeling her deep knowledge of the game and her characteristic composure, she pursued a career in umpiring. Her rise through the ranks was swift and distinguished. In 2022, she joined the ICC Development Panel of Umpires, becoming the first female umpire from Zimbabwe to earn that distinction. She made her domestic List A debut in the Pro50 Championship in October 2022, and her senior international umpiring career began in September 2023. Then came the moment that would define her legacy: in January 2023, she officiated in the final of the ICC Under-19 Women's T20 World Cup between India and England in South Africa — the first Zimbabwean woman ever to umpire a Cricket World Cup final. She did not stop there. In 2024, she became the first female Zimbabwean umpire to stand in a men's domestic fixture in the Logan Cup. That same year she officiated at the ICC Women's T20 World Cup, and in 2025 she was part of the historic all-female panel of match officials at the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup. By the time of her passing, she had stood in 63 senior international matches across multiple formats. Known for her composure and sound judgment on the field, and described by those who worked alongside her as a model of professionalism and generosity toward others, Sarah Dambanevana showed young Zimbabwean women that they belong at the highest levels of the game. She passed away in Harare on 12 October 2026, aged 36, following complications from a medical procedure. The cricket world mourned her deeply. Her legacy — of firsts, of open doors, of quiet determination — will endure for generations.

Sarah served Zimbabwe with distinction, first as a player and then as an umpire whose ability earned her a place on the world stage. Watching her stand in a World Cup final was a moment of immense pride for our cricket community and our country.
