Akin Falayajo

Juliana Falayajo

Juliana Ayinke Falayajo (née Joshua) was born on 10 September 1939 in Ilesha, Osun State, Nigeria, the second daughter of Pa Ezekiel Akinlotan Joshua and Mama Abigail Joshua, both widely respected merchants of the former Western Region. From an early age, Ayinke embodied the values of discipline, hard work, and determination that would define her life and inspire generations.

Her educational journey began at Otapete Methodist Primary School (1946–1953), followed by Methodist Girls’ Modern School, Agunrodo, Ilesa (1954–1956). Showing an early flair for teaching, she pursued training at the Government Teacher Training College (GTTC), Cappa, Ilesa (1958–1960).

After graduating, she began her teaching career at Council Modern School, Oke Oye, Ilesa (1961–1962). Ever ambitious, Ayinke travelled to the United Kingdom (1962–1965), where she studied at the University of Reading and earned her Teacher’s Grade I Certificate, a bold achievement for a young Nigerian woman of her time.

During her teacher training years, destiny brought her into contact with Mr. Wole Falayajo, then laying his own foundations in education. Their paths first crossed in January 1959 at her father’s motor spare parts shop in Ilesha, thanks to a family introduction. What began as a friendship blossomed into a lifelong partnership.

After years of correspondence while both studied abroad, Ayinke and Wole reunited in Nigeria and were married on 10 April 1966. The couple’s love was one of deep companionship. They affectionately called each other “Pat” (short for Partner). Together, they built a home, raised a family, and supported one another’s dreams. Their union was blessed with four children: Olumuyiwa, Kolawole, Olufunmilayo, and Akintayo.

Ayinke’s professional career spanned more than three decades across Nigeria, the UK, and Canada:

• 1966 - 1970: She taught at St. Bernadine’s Girls’ Grammar School, Oyo, while raising her first two children.
• 1970 - 1972: She accompanied her husband to Canada, where he pursued for a PhD at the University of Toronto, while their young sons remained in Nigeria with their grandmother.
• 1973 - 1981: On returning to Nigeria, she taught at CAC Primary School, Irefin, Ibadan, rising to the position of Headmistress.
• 1982 - 1987: She joined Methodist Grammar School, Bodija, where she taught Integrated Science and later became Vice-Principal.

Her government career culminated in an audacious step: an early retirement to establish her own school. In the late 1980s, she founded Abiodun Metropolitan Nursery & Primary School at Samonda, Ibadan. What began in a small space at the Women’s Development Centre grew into a thriving educational institution.

She designed and supervised the construction of both the school and the family home at Kongi, Bodija, with her characteristic energy and attention to detail.

Beyond the classroom, she also ran FREC (Falayajo Remedial Evening Coaching), evening lessons that prepared countless children in Ibadan for secondary school entrance exams. Through both FREC and Abiodun Metropolitan Schools, she touched thousands of lives, leaving an enduring mark on education in Nigeria.

Ayinke was more than an educator; she was a visionary entrepreneur. From making Adire to pioneering small businesses, including even kerosene trading, she modelled resilience, creativity, and adaptability. She invested these qualities in her children, showing them that no work was beneath them, and that diligence always bore fruit.

She was also a builder of people. Many relatives, nieces, nephews, and cousins lived under her care. She opened her home generously, nurturing others as though they were her own children. In family and community alike, she was a pillar - firm, loving, and unwavering in her faith.

A woman of deep Christian faith, Ayinke embodied resilience in adversity. When her husband faced life-threatening heart disease in the 1990s, she tirelessly advocated and raised support until he received lifesaving surgery in London. A determination that gave the family another three decades with him.

She also modelled lifelong learning. After raising her children, she returned once again to the University of Cardiff, this time earning a BSc in Science Education with Second Class Upper Honours.

She was known for her elegance and style. Even in her later years, she dressed with poise, carrying herself with dignity. To her children and grandchildren, she was both disciplinarian and cheerleader; firm but deeply affectionate. Her cane might have been well used, but so were her words of encouragement, wisdom, and humour. She rejoiced in her 13 grandchildren, each of whom carries forward part of her spirit.

Her grandchildren fondly remember “Grandma Ibadan” as a source of unconditional love, discipline, humour, and inspiration. Her siblings recall her as a pillar of strength, one who redirected their lives and helped them succeed. Friends and colleagues describe her as a true virtuous woman (Proverbs 31) - industrious, loving, and principled.

In her final years, Ayinke faced dementia, which slowly dimmed her memory but never erased her essence. Her life, however, cannot be defined by those years of decline, but by the 80 years of brilliance, courage, and love that came before.

On 21 August 2025, at the age of 85, Juliana Ayinke Falayajo peacefully returned to her Creator.

Ayinke’s life was one of faith, service, resilience, and legacy. Born into a society that limited women, she broke boundaries, educated generations, built institutions, raised an extraordinary family, and lived with grace and conviction.

Her legacy lives on through her children who are distinguished professionals in leadership, business, education, and medicine; her grandchildren, her school, and the countless lives she touched.

Juliana Ayinke Falayajo was, and remains, a mother of nations, a teacher of teachers, and a woman of excellence.

All glory be to God alone.
