She left behind a giant suitcase of the happiest memories.

Judith Rosemary Locke Chalmers was a warmth-giving force in British broadcasting — a woman whose smile, golden tan, and infectious enthusiasm carried audiences to sun-drenched shores for more than six decades. Born on 10 October 1935 in Gatley, Cheshire, to David Chalmers, an architect, and Millie, a medical secretary, she grew up in Cheadle with a spirit that made the whole world feel like a destination worth exploring. At just 13 years old she passed an audition for BBC Northern Children's Hour, becoming one of Britain's earliest child broadcasters — a sign of things to come. She honed her craft through the 1950s on BBC Manchester, then in 1959, at the age of 24, she was appointed a BBC television announcer — a prestigious position in an era of only one channel. Through the 1960s she became a familiar voice on BBC Radio, presenting Family Favourites and Woman's Hour, and a familiar face on screen hosting Come Dancing from 1961 to 1965. The 1970s brought the role that would define her public life. From 1974, Judith fronted ITV's Wish You Were Here…?, guiding Britain's holiday-makers through exotic destinations with effortless charm. At the height of its popularity the programme drew 18 million viewers per episode, and she would present more than 500 editions over nearly three decades — an unmatched feat in British travel television. Affectionately nicknamed "Miss Five-Star" for her love of luxury hotels, she became the nation's most trusted guide to the wider world. Along the way, she helped launch the television career of Mary Berry by inviting her onto Good Afternoon as a cooking expert. Off screen, Judith was devoted to her husband Neil Durden-Smith, a sports broadcaster and former naval officer, whom she married in 1964 and remained with until her death. Together they raised a daughter, Emma, and a son, Mark, who inherited her gift for television presenting, and they shared the joy of six grandchildren. Judith Chalmers died peacefully at home on 21 May 2026, surrounded by her family, after a period of illness. She had, as her family so perfectly put it, lived an extraordinary life and left behind a giant suitcase of the happiest memories. Her warmth, glamour, and boundless curiosity touched the lives of millions — and the world is a richer place for every journey she invited us to take.

Judith was a terrific success on TV, and I was happy to receive many invitations to join her and her hubby Neil in their home in Portugal. We got on so well together over the years. She was great fun, generous in spirit and also very witty. She will be greatly missed. Rest in peace Jude.

Dame Mary Berry

Judith Chalmers gave me this advice, and I still follow it. Whenever I'm filming for television, I always imagine I'm talking to just one person.
