Joni Maybellene Melvin Reiter was born in Gaston County, NC, in late summer 2011. Despite her humble Gashouse roots, she would go on to have a more robust life than many humans can claim, living in New York and Nashville, among other places. She traveled as far north as Maine, as far south as Florida, and even journeyed out west to Wyoming on multiple occasions. Through it all, she remained a beloved and dutiful companion to her mom, and then to her adoptive father Zac, too.
She hated bikes but loved her cat siblings. In her later years, she awed everyone with how well she could pull off a black turtleneck. Her favorite films were Kung Fu Panda and Kung Fu Panda 2. Yes, she was a technically a dog, but she was always more than that to us.
Joni, aka Joan, aka Jojo, aka Jonelle: You were so special, my girl. We will miss you forever.

My baby as a baby

Jonelle, you are simply the best girl. Babysitting you in 2022 literally changed our lives, because you injected so much joy into our house in just a week that we knew we had to adopt a dog right away. That timing put us exactly in the path of Henry Sugar, who became your pal and honorary cousin. I know my old girl Mollie is waiting for you so you can roll in stinky stuff and be trash raccoons together. Love you forever.

Joni is literally the reason we got our boy when we did, and she will always be grandmother to Henry and Pip. Such a sweet, beautiful girl!

You’d never know they had recently menaced a bunch of raccoon babies

We treasured the moments when you let us host Joni in our home. She was a free dog in Paris, she would never let them pave paradise and put up a parking lot, she had a Secret Place, and she was Dakota (some deep Joni Mitchell deep cuts in those last two)
