I lit the way so others could run. Run far.

Georgina Lightning — known to those who loved her as Georgie, and honoured by her spirit name White Bear Woman — was a trailblazing Cree filmmaker, actress, writer, and producer from the Samson Cree Nation, whose life's work fundamentally changed how Indigenous people were seen and heard on screen. Born Georgina Lynn De Jong on July 4, 1963, in Edmonton, Alberta, she first studied at the Alberta University of Fine Arts before summoning extraordinary courage in 1990: as a single mother of three young children, she moved her family — including her mother, Bernice De Jong, who came to support her — to Los Angeles to attend the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She was the only student there raising children, and she graduated as valedictorian of her class, earning the Michael Toma Award for most-improved actor. Hollywood of the 1990s offered Indigenous performers a narrow, stereotyped range of roles. Rather than accept those limits, Georgina turned her frustration into fuel. She stepped behind the camera and, in 2008, made history as the first North American Indigenous woman to direct a major feature film. That film — "Older Than America," which she also wrote and starred in — drew from her own father's experience as a residential school survivor. It went on to win more than 20 festival awards, including Best Director at the American Indian Motion Picture Awards. In 2007, Filmmaker Magazine had named her one of its 25 New Faces of Independent Film, and in 2010, the White House Project honored her with its Epic Award for Emerging Artist. Alongside executive producer Audrey Martinez, Georgina co-founded Tribal Alliance Productions to open doors for Native American, First Nations, and Indigenous filmmakers. She also founded the Native Media Network to advance Native talent across the industry. After returning to Alberta in 2012, she continued acting in celebrated productions — Blackstone, Trickster (earning a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the 2021 Canadian Screen Awards), Three Pines, Alaska Daily, and more — all while mentoring the next generation of Indigenous storytellers. A survivor of domestic violence whose faith in community never wavered, Georgina dreamed of making Edmonton the Indigenous film capital of North America. She passed away on October 5, 2026, at Enoch Rodeo Grounds near Edmonton, doing something she loved — filming an Indian Relay horse racing event. She was 63 years old. Her legacy lives in every Indigenous voice she helped amplify, and in the doors she refused to let stay closed.

Georgina Lightning was my first role model. When I got into the business I knew something was broken and early in my journey I came upon the legend that was Georgina. This tragic and sudden loss has rocked the entire Indigenous arts and cinema community to its core. Thank you Georgina for lighting the way for so many of us.

A spiritual, honourable, humble person who loved her grandkids with all her heart. She'd never talk about herself yet she was this Indian celebrity who we needed so much. It hurts the heart, but all we can do is honour her name and remember her importance to Turtle Island.

I'm so sorry Crystle. Prayers to you and your family. I was with your mom in July and as always, she was the kindest, warmest human ever.

I always felt she supported my career, she offered gentle and generous guidance. And she was just such a warm and bright soul, and so fierce as well.

I can't believe I am writing this. A legend, a friend, a powerhouse, director, filmmaker, beautiful, trailblazing Cree actress Georgina Lightning passed away suddenly today while doing what she loved, filming. Georgina was so so incredibly kind and supportive to me.
