Sid Burrus was not only one of my great educators and mentor. He was also a friend who helped me obtain my advanced degrees from RIce. But most importantly he supported me at a very difficult time in my life giving me great advice and support. He will be missed by everyone who knew him, but as they know the world is a better place because of him. My condolence to his family and loved ones.

Fran & I have known, and loved Sidney and Mary Lee since September 1965! The four of us joined Covenant Church on October 3, 1965, and we have enjoyed their presence as well as the birth and growth of our children through all those years! One of the many events in our lives that was influenced by Sidney was in 1989 when Sidney strongly encouraged us to take a trip to Europe. We "mortgaged the kid's future" and went for 5 weeks! It was a life-changing experience for all of us. Thank you Sidney! That was one of the many essences of Sidney - life changing! We are deeply grieved at his loss to us but deeply thankful for his presence in our lives! I am seeking to embrace the reflections of Francis Weller who said, "The work of the mature person is to carry grief in one hand and gratitude in the other and to be stretched large by them. … If I carry only grief, I'll bend toward cynicism and despair. If I have only gratitude, I'll become saccharine and won't develop much compassion for other people's suffering. Grief keeps the heart fluid and soft, which helps make compassion possible."

So glad I held on to this mug from our CSB@70 celebration at Rice in February 2005.

Dear Burrus family - - I am so profoundly sorry for the loss of dear Sidney so close on the heels of Mary Lee. I was moved by yesterday's service. A beautiful memorial. I first met Sidney when I interviewed at Rice more than 20 years ago. Part of my interview rounds were with deans Kathy Matthews and Sidney Burrus. Kathy, of course, had read everything with great precision and was absolutely lovely. Sidney had clearly not read my resume nor did he really know what position I was interviewing for. Instead, with a twinkle in his eye, he kept sliding books he thought I should read across the table at me. I remember chuckling as I left his office. I was delighted to learn at his memorial that he was known for recommending books without having finished them himself. Later (I got the job), I got to spend a lot of time with him over the years as Connexions (now OpenStax) got up and running. He was an absolute delight to work with - - he exuded kindness and intelligence and joy. He modeled how to move through this world, asking probing questions, offering advice, and what really struck me: taking such genuine interest in every single person he met. And that laugh! It was always a good day if I ran into Sidney on campus. I hope it's some comfort that so many feel exactly the same way about Sidney - - you know he lives on in so many hearts. I will miss him.

On January 22, 2021, Steve and Paula Baker and I invited Sidney to join us for a virtual Jewish Friday-Night Dinner. Sidney loved the idea, but wanted to know what is involved. I told him that there are some rituals, dinner, and discussion. What will we talk about he asked. I told him, jokingly, that we will discuss whether time is linear or branching. That answer satisfied him. At the end we discussed linear vs non-linear models. I explained to Sidney how this is related to tax rates, and he loved it. He enjoyed the dinner enormously. We had a few email exchanges after that dinner, but this was the last time that I saw Sid, even virtually. When I reached out to him in March, he was not reachable any more.
