Mary Elizabeth Borzelleca, 90, died as she lived - quietly and peacefully, surrounded by family - on February 11, 2022. She was born in Philadelphia, PA, and moved to Richmond in 1959 when her husband, Dr. Joseph F. Borzelleca, accepted a position at the Medical College of Virginia. In their 67 years of marriage, Mary and Joseph explored the world and created a warm, welcoming home. Mary will be remembered for her gentleness, soft voice, quiet and charming demeaner, love of people and nature (especially birds), and compassion. She was nonjudgmental and accepting of everyone. Mary had a keen sense of humor, and was creative, artistic, and musical. She was a student of the arts who cherished her time in the museums and cathedrals of Europe, and who knew the many sites of Rome like a tour guide. Her delicious meals were savored by many. Her empathy, generosity and strong Catholic faith were the foundations of her life and work, from raising her children and running the family to volunteering for numerous charitable organizations, including St. Bridget's Parish and St. Mary's Hospital. Mary was the heart of the family she tenderly nurtured and fiercely protected. She is survived by six children who adored her: Joseph Jr. (Ellen Brock), Paul (Marlena Hobson), David (Susan), Michael (Gretchen), Terri (Paul Fad), and Marc (Joseph Miska). She is also survived by her loving grandchildren, Matthew Borzelleca (Megan), Daniel Borzelleca (Whitney), Nolan Borzelleca (Erin), Katherine Borzelleca, Rebecca Borzelleca, Connor Fad, and Ryan Fad; and her great-granddaughters Elizabeth, Ariel, Mary Carter, and Harper. The family acknowledges with gratitude the compassionate care of Mary by Ms. Ginny Poole, Ms. Ada Clinton, CNA, Ms. Anne C. Waiyaki, CNA, Ms. Sandra Key, CNA and the competent and compassionate care provided by Bon Secours Hospice especially Ms. Kay Hall, RN, Ms. Joyce Brookman, RN, Ms. Robin Rio, music therapist, and Ms. Leigh Mackintosh, chaplin.

Thank you everyone who attended moms wake and funeral, and who contributed to her favorite charity, and for all the notes and texts and calls. I think I speak for everyone in our family when I say how overwhelmed and grateful we are for the support, what an amazing group of friends we all have.

We are so saddened to hear of your loss. Mary's gentility and grace was apparent to everyone who had the privilege of meeting her. She had a way of taking your hand and smiling at you that made you feel warm and loved. Our hearts go out to you and your family. Much love, Lisa and Ronan Barrett

I learned from my mom not to judge others, and always find something good in them (sometimes that's harder than it seems). To leave a place better than you found it. To enjoy great food and the people you share it with. To value experiences over things. To never try to one-up someone. To help those who need it, give to those who ask for it, and always raise up your loved ones, never bring them down. These may sound like cliches, but to her it was how she actually lived her life. And it was a life well lived. If I can figure out how to make a kir cocktail, your favorite, I'll raise it in your honor.
