Leading by example, Jeff Galloway continued to run races throughout his life

Jeff Galloway, who passed away on February 25, 2026, was an American distance runner, coach, and author whose influence transformed recreational marathon running worldwide. Born on November 12, 1945, Galloway first distinguished himself as an elite competitive runner, proudly representing the United States at the 1972 Munich Olympics and competing at the highest levels of middle and long-distance running throughout the 1970s.

Following his competitive career, Galloway discovered his true calling as a coach and innovator. He developed the revolutionary Galloway Run-Walk-Run method, a training technique that combines running intervals with strategic walking breaks. This approach fundamentally changed marathon training by making long-distance running accessible and achievable for runners of all abilities while significantly reducing injury risk. What was once considered a sport only for elite athletes became a realistic goal for millions of everyday runners through his methodology.

Galloway founded Galloway's Marathon Clinics, which trained hundreds of thousands of runners and became a cornerstone of the recreational running community. He authored numerous bestselling books on marathon training and running that served as essential guides for generations of runners. Through his seminars, clinics, and online platforms, he reached runners across the globe, always emphasizing smart training practices, injury prevention, and sustainable performance.

Beyond his technical contributions, Galloway was a passionate advocate and mentor who inspired people of all ages and abilities to discover the transformative power of running. His legacy extends far beyond race times and medals. He democratized distance running, proving that with the right approach, anyone could experience the joy, health benefits, and personal achievement that running offers. His impact on running culture will be felt for generations to come.
