Edward Lucie-Smith

Edward Lucie-Smith at home, surrounded by the art and objects that filled his world as critic and collector.

Movements in Art since 1945 — the book that became a standard text in art education across the world.

John Edward McKenzie Lucie-Smith was born on 27 February 1933 in Kingston, Jamaica, into the world of the British colonial elite — a childhood of tropical colour and social privilege that would later haunt and nourish his poetry in equal measure. When his father died in 1941, his world shifted irrevocably; in 1946 he and his mother crossed the Atlantic to Britain, where he would be educated at The King's School, Canterbury, before reading History at Merton College, Oxford.

After two years as an Education Officer in the Royal Air Force, Lucie-Smith spent a decade in the advertising world, writing copy at Notley's by day and poetry by night. In 1961 his debut collection, A Tropical Childhood and Other Poems, announced him as a significant voice in British letters, winning both the John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize and the Arts Council Triennial Award. Around the same time, he took over leadership of The Group — the influential mid-century poetry circle founded by Philip Hobsbaum — and in 1964 was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

In 1966 he walked away from advertising entirely and committed to the life of a full-time freelance writer. Over the following six decades he published or edited more than a hundred books, encompassing poetry, art history, biography, and cultural criticism. His landmark study Movements in Art since 1945, first published in 1969 and continuously in print ever since, became a standard text in art education worldwide. Symbolist Art (1972) and The Invented Eye (1975) confirmed his authority across multiple fields, while his 1999 collaboration with Judy Chicago on Women and Art: Contested Territory demonstrated his willingness to engage fearlessly with contested territory.

A regular voice on BBC Radio 3, a longtime contributor to The London Magazine and ArtReview, and a curator at galleries from Liverpool to New Orleans, Lucie-Smith was as much a presence in the art world as he was an observer of it. He was a proud gay man who had lived through the years when homosexuality was criminalized in Britain, and he documented erotic male imagery in his photography long before Queer Art entered the mainstream conversation.

Mischievous, irreverent, and constitutionally incapable of losing interest, Edward Lucie-Smith remained a working critic until his final years. He died on 11 July 2026, aged 93, leaving behind an extraordinary body of work and a critical voice that was, as those who knew his prose attested, impossible to separate from the man himself.
