Biographie

Louise Hara (nee Richard), age 69, of Chilliwack BC, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2021 of cancer.

Originally from Aylmer, Quebec, she moved to BC in 1980 where she has made her home for the last 40 years.

She leaves behind husband Joe Boguski, daughter Miki Hara (Andy) and son Kenji Hara (Erin) and siblings in BC, Ontario and Quebec: Claire Heistek, Hélène Cameron (Don), Robert Richard (Danielle), Denise Richard (David), Luc Richard (Céline), Micheline Richard and Pierre (Peter) Richard. Predeceased by brother beloved Marc Richard.

No funeral arrangements are planned during this pandemic and her family will be keeping her ashes but we would like to invite you to keep an eye on the events page for virtual memorial events in the coming days and months.

Louise will be remembered by her family as a loving force of nature.  She was the best listener, a passionate and thoughtful advocate for social justice, a joyful singer and dancer, a voraceous learner, a beautiful artist, and a creator of community.

Dear Louise: your salon sisters were remembering and reminiscing about you this week, and many of us lit candles yesterday on the anniversary of your passing. Although you are no longer with us in body, you are still so much with us in spirit and have a permanent place in our hearts. Never forgotten, always loved.

I'm thinking about Louise today, siting outside and listening to birds. I keep a lot of good memories of her, from our visits to BC to singing around the fire at the cottage... she was always so nice to me. I appreciated talking to her, from really serious topics to little things...i liked how calm she was and enjoyed life as it’s simple expression : nature, music, coffee and crosswords (i'm sure there’s a lot more, but that’s what i remember :)

I found a picture of our latest meeting at Pete’s cottage in 2019, with my son Louis. Great memories that i will cherish. That day, Louise gave me a pillow with Louis picture on it...this attention really touched me. Rest in peace dear Louise. ❤

I'm very sorry to hear today of Louise's passing. In the early 80's I worked at the RBC in Cassiar when Louise was Branch Administration Officer. I remember her being a very strong and capable individual at that time, and with a big smile. It's very nice to hear that Louise had a lovely family life and achieved so much over all the years. My sincere condolences to all her family members.

Just learned of Louise's passing. My deepest condolences to the whole family. I worked with Louise at the Royal bank branch in Cassiar. The only time the bank had all female staff. Louise always had a smile on her face and was fun to be around. Brought Miki to work few times and I remember that sweet little face and dark curly hair so well.
I am so sorry for your loss.

Louise

My first memory of you is of the tiny little blackbird flailing for attention.

I saw you

Fledging and soaring away,

Cooing over your babies,

Watching for an opportunity to make a difference, and

Caring for your family and friends,

Over a lifetime, or just about.

Responsibilities taken care of, you started

Flapping your wings,

Enjoying your environment,

Relaxing into your new nest.

That was too short and

Now you are gone.

I see you

Flying away little blackbird,

Flying away home.

I was heartbroken to hear of Louise's passing, especially since we had just reconnected last summer after many years and we both were looking forward to meeting again once this virus was under control. Louise and I were very close in the 70s, both in Aylmer and in Sandy Hill, where we shared an apartment on Daly Street. It was a very tumultuous time for me and I couldn't have asked for a better friend than Louise. She has always been in my heart because of it. I was so happy to hear from her last summer and we managed to have some wonderful chats on Messenger. I regret that we didn't have a chance to get together but I know that, because she was a very big part of a very important time in my life, I will think of her often with love for all she was to me. My sympathies to Joe, Miki, Kenji and all the Richard siblings. I will walk to Britannia Beach tomorrow in her memory.

Lousie was "good people". I worked with Louise in many different capacities and places over the years - PoCo Women's Centre, Vibrant Surrey and Surrey North Delta Division of Family Practice. I got to know her best at Surrey Women's Centre where she was the Treasurer for many years. Louise had a love of community and a very special way of creating safe spaces for people to connect, learn and serve others. She will continue to have a long and ongoing impact on Surrey Women's Centre. She led the charity through some of the most challenging times with an open mind, attentive ear and understanding heart. Up to last month, I still share stories of Louise facilitating 'a fish bowl exercise' as part of a strategic planning exercise many years ago. This experience had a profound impact on me and the charity - we learned to see ourselves through the eyes of others and identify the areas in which we could do better....without judgement. I think I can speak on behalf of Surrey Women's Centre when I say - "thank you".

Joe, Miki and Kenji - she talked about the three of you ALL the time! You were definitely the love of her life. I am thankful her heart was big enough to include Surrey Women's Centre and all of the women and children we served over the years. I wish you well.

BTW I have been going through old photos looking for snapshots of Louise to add to your collection of memories. Nothing yet but I will forward any photos I find in the future.

Take good care.

I had the opportunity to meet Louise in 2012 when I joined Fraser Health and had the privilege to be assigned to work and partner with the Surrey-North Delta Division of Family Practice. Louise was the Executive Director at that time and we worked really closely for a span of two years. I can only describe the experience as fantastic! Louise was a savvy and committed partner, she was a very strong and inspirational leader and overall, she was a wonderful human being. After working together in that capacity, I left FH and went to work for Doctors of BC and continued working with her from a different standpoint until she left the division, developing our professional relationship further, but also our personal one. I want to believe that Louise and I became good friends and we were in touch quite frequently via LinkedIn, e-mail, and phone until she moved to Chilliwack and announced she was formally retiring. In an interesting turn of events, after all these years I currently hold the role she built up from scratch for the SND Division as the ED of the organization. I have to confess it is my true honour and as Louise was an inspiration to me, it is a constant reminder about working hard and doing my best to "fill her shoes" and do as a great job as she did when she was the ED for this organization. I was quite saddened by learning that she passed away and I want to use this opportunity to offer (from a personal standpoint and on behalf of our organization), our most sincere condolences. Louise and all of you (her family) are in our prayers. She (and the difference she made in "our world of healthcare and community development in Surrey") will always be remembered. R.I.P.

Walked down to the sea on south Vancouver Island, passing first through a magnificent arboretum on the memorial grounds of Ross Bay and thinking of how deeply rooted, like these magnificent trees, is Louise’s friendship is in me. Her passion for justice, and the example of her deep calm, the spaciousness she held for others, her integrity, and her adventuring spirit will stay with me for all time. As we approached the sea, a golden sidewalk of light stretched all the way across the bay, reminding me that I can always walk with the sense of Louise’s presence still near. I will keep talking with you a long while, Louise!

I chose Minnekhada park to remember mom today.

As I picked my way through the trails I was reminded of some of the lessons mom has taught me - namely to mindfully choose my path, whether it’s the well worn steps of those who have gone before me or to blaze my own trail. It also occurred to me that while this next part of the path is hard and full of challenges, there is also beauty in it if I look around.

I can see how rich her life and relationships are and the love from her friends and family spilling over have been heartwarming. I don’t know if she knew how truly loved and admired she was and I hope she can see it all from wherever she is now. That she felt all our collective thoughts of her as we walked together and apart.

The deep quiet and the softly drifting snow felt like a gentle reminder to breathe and to trust that she was there all around and always will be.

Some years ago, Ali Grant and Louise and I would get together for lunch and a walk every couple of months, alternating neighbourhoods between my Main St. digs, Ali's place in the West End, and Louise's (then) home in Coquitlam. We decided we would honour our memory of our dear friend by walking with Louise one more time - Ali and me in body, and Louise with us in spirit. Of course, we had to be near water, so here we are on the south shore of False Creek this morning.

I am so terribly sorry & shocked to learn of Louise's passing.

She was such a beautiful spirit that I had the honour of knowing.

We first met about 10 years ago when Louise hired me as a Consultant with the Surrey-North Delta Division of Family Practice. Since that first connection, I so admired Louise's strong sense of integrity, fierceness, joy & authenticity through & through.

With each conversation or correspondence over the years, I loved hearing about Joe, Miki, Kenji, & Louise's latest adventure.

My heart goes out to you, Joe, & family. Louise will always remain in my thoughts.

Peace,
Jennifer Scrubb

Walked down to the beach this evening, thinking of Louise, sending love and respect and honour for the bedrock she has been in my life.

I’m so thankful for the many years as Miki’s childhood best friend, the thousands of times I was welcomed in Louise and Joe’s home. The infinite meals I was welcomed to! The sinkfulls of dishes I probably didn’t wash enough of!

I will always remember Louise as having an open door, as being open and willing to hear you and help you if you needed it. I saw her through the years, never wary to keep that door open and welcome those who came through it. While still maintaining healthy boundaries! I will never stop admiring her. Sending love to everyone else whose life was enriched by this brilliant person.

I’ve been having a hard time coming to terms with Lou’s passing. I wanted to do something that represented for me the most beautiful qualities about her that I admired so much. A few days ago I ran my first half marathon. For me running brings out clarity, determination, bravery, patience and gratitude. All of these qualities lived so clearly in Lou. To me, she was the definition of clarity and wisdom. I will be walking today and think of her in every step but I also wanted to share that she very much visited me last week on this run in the form of a rainbow. That run was special because she was there every moment.

Recommended Reading: The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. We went to Seattle for a weekend to take in some Blue Jays games. When Lou was searching hotels, this one came up on her screen, she said "there's something familiar about this!" She had read the book much earlier. The hotel was built around 1910(?), and is all original except for mattresses and toilets. A single bare light bulb hanging from the ceiling. Separate men's and women's washrooms down the hall. There was a clawfoot tub in the "bath" room for the women. You get the idea. It is a story of heartbreak, love, trust, hope, I won't go on...I read the book when I got home. Very much worth it.

We were so saddened to hear of Louise’s passing. It is still so hard to believe. I love seeing all the pictures posted showing her lovely smile and laughing eyes.
Some special memories have:
We joined Arthur Murray Dance Studio together. We had so much fun at the studio and after we would stop at their place for a glass of wine and review our steps. Lots of laughs!
Then there was the music. Hootenanny time with Joe and Louise. Louise was always so encouraging and was able to make us feel so good about our singing. She would sit beside me on the couch and smile and nod to me from time to time. She was always so positive about everything and had a way of making you feel good about yourself.
It was our pleasure to have known Louise.
Louise, you were loved by many and you will be greatly missed.

Avril Orloff a publié un hommage .

A couple of weeks ago a small group of Sistas met on Zoom to send collective healing prayers to Louise as she traversed the latest (and, tragically, final) phase of her illness. My partner was in the next room attending a Zoom workshop on Yiddish music. Despite closed doors, the music seeped its way into my room. At first I tried to tune it out, but then I thought, why not use it? And so I envisioned our ebullient Louise dancing freely and gaily to the music, and then imagined Louise and Joe dancing together in the centre of a room while we all danced around them in a circle. Finally, in good Jewish wedding tradition, we picked them up in their chairs and danced them around in the air, all of us laughing and whirling and singing and rejoicing. It felt fitting, because when I think of Louise, I think of joy and laughter and dancing and music. Through all the years I've known her (since about 2008), and through all the ups and downs she has lived, I've never known her to be anything but generous of spirit, positive of outlook, and the walking embodiment of love.

As a Soup Salon Sista, I’m tempted to look for a food metaphor to describe Louise, and I think I have it. In the collective broth of our gatherings, Louise was the seasoning that binds all the others ingredients together and makes the dish taste just right. Subtle and gentle, it doesn’t grab centre stage like the flashier ingredients, but without it, the dish is just somehow less satisfying, and you know something is missing. We will have to work harder to find that ingredient now that Louise is no longer with us in body - but I know she will always be with us in spirit, and I will imagine her sprinkling her stardust into our soup to make it delicious again.

Dance on, radiant spirit! You are so loved and missed.

Over 15 years of friendship, Louise became a sister to me also (despite no apparent need in her to acquire spare siblings, given her good-sized clan). Some friends I have treasured for such qualities as a rapier wit. Louise I treasured especially for her depth and the spaciousness with which she seemed to meet all others.
I knew her joyful laughter, her love of song and dance and music-making, her gluten-free tricks with decadent chocolate desserts, her attention to getting just the right amount of protein in every meal, her breadth of study, her consulting and facilitation skill, her love of back road discoveries and quiet places by bodies of water, and her readiness to jump in and swim.

But most of all, I knew Louise as the deep well within our salon circle from whom so many of us drew a gift of pureness. She embodied a quiet, steady quality of attention that was stripped of all persuasive or judging inclination. She listened with kindness and with care. She spoke in the same way, staying committed over the long-term and in every encounter to a shared pact of bravery and buoyancy—finding it, sharing it, extending it. I love her and miss her unfathomably already.

One of my favourite aspects of Louise was her bravery and willingness to try and learn new things; always challenging herself to expand her horizons. For example, last year while Miki and I were living in London we kept in touch regularly with her and Joe playing online boardgames through Steam such as Ticket to Ride while streaming audio chat.

Miki and I also taught her how to play Dungeons & Dragons and introduced her to role playing games and she did very well! Her character, a half-elf druid named Rainbow Bright, was able to save a local farmers guard pomeranian from a troupe of goblin highwaymen that were harassing the nearby major trade highway.

Words can’t express how much I will miss Louise. Louise was such a huge part of my life for many years. My friend Sandy, Louise and myself were known to others as three very special friends who enjoyed so many experiences. The good ones and the bad ones. Louise was always there when needed to laugh with or to cry with. So many great conversations, Louise always a library of information. The three of us took holidays together, dined together, played together and together enjoyed our families stories. I remember many times when Louise came to help me with various challenges without any hesitation at all. Louise was the definition of a True Friend. I miss her smile and “everything” that made Louise My Friend.

You and Sandy were absolutely the greatest of special friends. The way the three of you were together was such a beautiful example of how deep friendship can be.

You three were so close, for so long...I felt special when I was allowed on a "date" with three lovely women. Thank you for being there then, and now. Love you both.

Louise was so very proud of her family, her children Miki and Kenji, and her husband Joe. They were all the love of her life, although in later years we did not get to see Miki and Kenji very often, Louise kept us apprised of what they were up to with a huge smile on her face. She was so proud of both of you. Love you all, Norm and Dawn

Louise had such a large heart, she loved her kids unconditionally, yet had room to love so many others. We are so so proud of Miki and Kenji. Thanks, Norm and Dawn.

I remember that well...it was indeed a surprise to find you in the next booth. I'm not sure if Lou recognized your laughter, or one of you heard her, it was a nice encounter! Thanks.

We were so privileged to have Louise for our sister in law. You will be greatly missed. Joe was very blessed to be your husband.
I love the video that Miki took of Louise & Joe dancing at an event at the studio in April 2018. The link is https://youtu.be/tBMO-lKcUwY

Thank you, sis...this video was our first experience with "competitive" dancing. We were critiqued by a pro with Arthur Murray, but there are no winners or losers. Except everyone is a winner. We were both terrified and excited, and this was the first time we actually did the routine with no mistakes!

I am saddened and shocked by Louise's passing. I worked with Louise as part of her job with the Surrey Division of Family Practice, I was on the panel that hired her. She became a friend and confidant and we met outside of work. She and Joe even attended a concert I was playing in. She was a gifted facilitator and worked well with challenging groups moving them forward through difficult issues. I can't believe she is gone and although I didn't see her often, we kept in touch. She will be terribly missed. I am so very sorry.

Jim, I well remember that concert you referred to. It was such a treat for both of us! But that was only a sideline to the relationship she had with you, and your name came up more than you might guess. in a good way.

I met Louise through the WOAW research project (Women Organizing Activities for Women) when she was at the PoCo Women's Centre. Louise was central to the success of this project - she understood women's issues deeply and had an amazing capacity to reach disenfranchised women in the community. We continued our work on the Women's Employability and Health Research Project and travelled together to Haida Gwaii to meet with project partners. At that time my son was 6 months old and came with us, and I have a clear memory of Louise singing him Quebecois lullabies when he was fussing. In everything she did, Louise showed such wisdom, insight, empathy, and passion. She was truly an old soul and bright light. I am so sorry for your loss.

Louise had an open heart for all four-legged fur babies, cats, horses, and especially dogs. This is Nikki, Louise in 2016 brought Nikki up to the Cariboo to visit us and play with Chevy in the snow. It was such a wonderful visit with Louise and Nikki.

Louise was so fond of our daughter, Emily (Kenji and Erin’s niece), though she didn’t get to spend much time with her. One memory I have of her is playing with Emily and chasing her around the sushi restaurant we went to and having such a blast! Emily must have been maybe 3 years old at the time.

A day we will never forget. Louise took me, James, and Liam (my grandsons) to George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary, her love for nature was infectious. In this photo she was showing James some nesting Crans, James was so excited to use her binoculars and watch the beautiful birds. Louise had a vast amount of knowledge and love to share it with others.
