Seres queridos

WELCOME, family and friends of Dad, Grandpa, Great-Grandpa and "Uncle Wayne" as we celebrate his 92 abundant years of life through a life sketch, video, photos, personal tributes and memories.

While we cannot gather together, we CAN remember many wonderful life events we shared with him through the years: multiple birthday bashes, anniversaries, church events, mission service, graduations, marriages, and other family memorial services.

Please add your Wayne Stories to this page under "Tributes." Wayne was the real deal -- a genuine California boy who loved his God, his country, his work and play, strangers in need, and of course his family and dear friends.

We can remember him through memorial gifts to the Sacramento Fijian Seventh-day Adventist Church.  Honoring Dad's Pacific Islands' church buildng and his devoted caregivers, Pastor Joseph and Sotia O'Connor, a gift in his name would be most appreciated. Please use the online link below, or mail your donation payable to the Sacramento Fijian SDA Church, c/o Pastor Joseph O'Connor, 5737 Haskell Way, Carmichael, CA 95608.

LIFE SKETCH - Wayne Kenneth Wesner

Wayne was born June 6, 1928 in Modesto, California, to Maude and Wilbur Wesner. The middle child, Wayne grew up in the Arbuckle almond orchards with his older sister Margie, and his younger brother Leon (Ed). Grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins worked the orchards for a time, before Wayne's parents moved further afield to Woodland, a two-year stint in Long Beach, and then back to the Sacramento Valley where Wayne graduated from Dixon High School.

He married June Mae Lammerding in 1950, left farming, and joined his father-in-law, John Lammerding, to learn the building trade. Wayne and June cherished their four creative daughters, Joleane, Carolyn, Beverly and Lavonne (sometimes called by their numbers:  Daughters 1,2,3, and 4).

Scores of custom homes and cabins from Sacramento to Tahoe remain standing that he designed and built with Wayne K. Wesner Contracting or supervised with the Pro Family's Wood Things company.  In 1960, he was selected to be the lead contractor to build the Sacramento Central Seventh-day Adventist Church next to the H Street bridge. The five-year project remains a testament to his carpentry skills and building management. He was also proud of his work extending the high school portion of Sacramento Adventist Academy. Later, he enjoyed mission building projects in the Pacific islands of the Republic of Kiribati.

"Captain Wayne" is best known for his Riverboat project.  Originally envisioned as a small, powered raft, his dream grew to a 60+ foot two-deck classic twin hull diesel vessel that required him to earn his Coast Guard captain's license. The decade plus project could not have been done without First Mate (Pastor) Jim Crabtree, scores of teen builders/painters, and a devoted, dedicated crew: Jon Salas, Ansel Oliver, Tim Botting, Duncan Henry, Shannon Whitnack and Rebekah Cotter.

The Riverboat sailed the Sacramento and American Rivers with thousands of students, at-risk teens, and many diverse groups. Wayne earned commendations and awards from law enforcement, the courts, and mariners. After more than 10 years of service, Wayne hung up his captain's hat, but enjoyed retelling Riverboat stories and memories for as long as he could.

Wayne was an avid pilot, motorcycle rider, and mountain adventurer--mostly to the Sierra Rubicon wilderness. For many years he rode or hiked in to a "secret" lagoon with best friend Bob Hallsted.  Soon his secret was out, and he led many youth groups to the swimming hole. Crew member Jon Salas continues to lead young hikers on similar adventures near the lagoon.

In retirement, Wayne and June travelled to Fiji, Europe, Israel, and around the States. He faithfully attended Sabbath School and church--even when he could no longer hear what was being said!

He loved his wife June for over 65 years, his extended family, and his beagles, Maude & Wilbur. He leaves behind his four daughters, their spouses, seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren:

Joleane Marie King (Francis) - Andrew King (Tiffany); Wallis & Loris King.  Anne-Marie Friday (Devan); Fiora and Owen.

Beverly Ann Wesner-Hoehn (Theodore)  -  Rudi Hoehn; Dr. Casey Hoehn (Kim).

Carolyn June Wesner (John Miller)  -  Chris Snyder; Gabriel and Cailyn.  Beau James Snyder (Megan); Emma and Zoey.  BonnyMae Baker (Peter); Addison.

Lavonne Fay Wesner (Martha Tirrell)

Ohhh—what a precious man. I met Uncle Wayne as a teenager at camp one year, held I think at Pine Springs Ranch. I remember his big warm smile and great hugs, and how special he made me feel. I felt so lucky that he adopted me as one of his nieces, and luckier still that he kept in touch with me for so many years. I looked forward to his letters because they always told stories and he always asked about mine. I loved that he signed it “Still love you, Uncle Wayne” each and every time. I was always amazed at how personal and long each letter was, and I remember thinking what a gift this was for each of us. Through my moves and his adventures, we sadly lost touch, but I thought of him often through my adult years and always remembered how much he LOVED: God, his family, his boat, his crew, his travels, and all of us. I still hang this small wooden bell he gave me (from a trip to Jerusalem I believe) in my Christmas tree each year. I’m not sure he realized how much he meant to me, but I’m looking forward to the day we can hug again in Heaven. Thank you for sharing him with us! ♥️

I’m so grateful for all the things I learned from Uncle Wayne and the people he surrounded himself with. I was a teenager and got to do so many fun things and learn how to work in great ways. His work of the Riverboat created a place for people to gather, work, and have fun—both as a crew and as guests on board. His way of creating such a space—on the Riverboat or one of a hundred other types of activities—enabled people not just to have fun but to bond and develop relationships, which is what life is all about. I’m so grateful too for the times in Tahoe, hiking the Rubicon, and getting to see and spend great times with friends at the secret lagoon—it really is a magical place. I half expect to go searching for it some day and discover that, like Wayne, it too is gone...taken away—but seared into my memory for the joy it brought while it was here.

Warren and I enjoyed so much the stories Wayne shared about his time on the riverboat and the young people he "counseled"; also, the missions that he led and the adventures involved. He lived life to the fullest and shared his time and talent without reserve. He will certainly be missed.

Where to begin! I have so many wonderful memories with my Grandpa Wayne. When I was younger I would get so excited for Grandpa and Nana to visit us! I loved helping him with building projects and he was always patient with me. He taught me how to use hammers and drills, how to mix and pour cement, and that there was no better way to end a long workday than with a dip in the pool and some suntanning. When I was in college he and Nana and I went on a Princess Cruise to Alaska. Nana loved to stop in all the shops and buy tourist trinkets, so much shopping that halfway through the trip she couldn't find any more cash in her purse! She accused Grandpa of stealing her money! Grandpa who rarely got upset flung open the closet in our room and said "There! That's where all your money went!" I couldn't help but laugh at the closet full of Teddy Bears (Nana could not resist a cute bear) and Russian dolls. Grandpa thought I stayed up too late during the cruise and gleefully woke me up at 7 AM for breakfast each morning. It was such a special time with both of them! I loved sitting next to Grandpa in church because he always had a candy for me in his pocket, either a Hershey's Kiss or Butterscotch. I also loved how he would lean over and whisper in my ear the latest church gossip during a lull in the service. :) Grandpa taught me how to drive a stick shift in Lavonne's Kia Spectra and made me drive back and forth from her Olive Ave house to his Bannister house. He wanted me to be comfortable driving up and down the hills. It was scary at the time but to this day I'm excellent at driving a manual! Grandpa attended all the major events in my life. My high school graduation, college graduation and he walked me down the aisle when I got married. He was so supportive of everything I did. I'm so glad that my daughter Addison got to meet Grandpa Wayne, the legend. Truly one of the greatest blessings in my life was to have Wayne Wesner as my Grandpa.

Wayne Wesner was wonderfully eccentric! It seemed like he was always up to something, quite playful, and then you found out that under all that childlike fun was some serious stuff! I admired the man. He did amazing service for SUA, Central Church, and the Carmichael Church. He even built an office addition when my wife was hired as the first female pastor at the Carmichael Church. I was classmates with his third daughter, Bev Wesner-Hoehn. She was the first female, senior-class president at SUA. What an impact Wayne has made!
