Always finding the try line — on the field and in the hearts of those who loved him.
Steven William Edmonds — known throughout the Shire simply as "Rock" — was one of Australian rugby league's most beloved wingers, a Cronulla-Sutherland Shark whose distinctive blonde hair and stylish play made him instantly recognisable on any ground in the country. Born on 4 March 1954 in Sydney, New South Wales, he grew up through the local junior ranks at the Taren Point club before earning his place in Cronulla's first-grade side.
Rock made his first-grade debut for the Sharks in 1972 at just 19 years of age. He quickly established himself the following season, featuring in the club's first eleven games of 1973 predominantly on the left wing, playing outside Sharks immortal Steve Rogers. Though injury sidelined him late that year, he had already contributed to the club's historic run to their maiden grand final — a milestone that cemented his place in the heart of the Cronulla faithful. Expanding his experience, he crossed to England in 1974, spending a season playing for Halifax.
His most unforgettable chapter arrived in 1978, when he played a pivotal role in Cronulla's second grand final appearance. In a moment that would be replayed by supporters for decades, he scored a crucial try in the corner off a Steve Rogers bomb — yet fate was unkind, and the Sharks fell 11-9 in the initial final and 16-0 in the replay three days later. Undeterred, Edmonds came back stronger: in 1979 he finished as Cronulla's top try scorer with 13 tries from 22 appearances, including a memorable hat-trick against North Sydney Bears.
What made "Rock" special was not raw pace — he himself would have been the first to acknowledge that — but an uncanny instinct for finding the try line and a gift for wing play that was as elegant as it was effective. He was a Life Member of the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks and, in 2017, was honoured with a nomination for the club's prestigious Team of the Half Century. He retired at the end of the 1981 season as one of the club's longest-serving players.
In retirement, Steven remained in the Shire he loved, spending 44 years alongside his devoted wife Lesley. He took quiet pleasure in trips to their van at Port Stephens and in watching his grandson Raiden carry on the football tradition with the local Malabula Panthers. Steven William Edmonds passed away on 21 August 2026, aged 72. He is remembered as one of the finest wingers Cronulla has ever produced.
