Let the memory of Stephane be with us forever

Stéphane Pascal Ruz, 59, passed away on September 26, 2026, in Miami Platja, Spain. Born on January 15, 1967, in Lyon, France, Stéphane’s life was marked by his work in education, his love of music and soccer, and the many gatherings he shared with those around him.

Stéphane served as a Head of School, teacher, and principal, with a career that took him to Lithuania, Morocco, and the United States. He brought his experience and dedication to the field of education across the places he called home. He loved soccer, particularly Lyon and Barcelona. Music was also an important part of his life; he enjoyed guitar, blues, rock and roll, and country music. Stéphane was a great cook who loved wine and dinner parties, creating occasions to share food, conversation, and time together.

Remembered as kind, generous, and funny, Stéphane will be deeply missed by his parents, Christine and Andre; his brother, Sigfrid, and sister-in-law, Alexandra; and his daughters, Charlotte and Caroline; and his wife, Claire.

On Tuesday, September 29, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., family and friends will gather for Stéphane’s cremation and an opportunity to say their final goodbyes at the Crematori Municipal de Reus (Av. de la Pau, 43203 Reus). The cremation will be followed by a gathering to celebrate his life, share memories, and be together in his honor.

For those unable to join the Tuesday gathering, a celebration of life will also be held on Friday, October 2. Further details will follow. Those planning to attend either gathering are asked to let the family know so that necessary arrangements may be made.

Instead of flowers or gifts, we kindly invite you to share a memory, a thought, or a photo. Your memories of Stéphane would mean a great deal to us and to his loved ones.

Stéphane’s memory will live on in the music he loved, the meals and celebrations he enjoyed sharing, and the lives touched through his work and friendships.

My family are so deeply saddened by the loss of Stephane - just a wonderful kind person, teacher, mentor. He became Head of the Village High School in Houston to the pioneer class. He mentored the students in kind and creative ways. his door was open to parents and students and through it all, with laughter and a we can do it attitude that was right for teenagers. He lived such a full and interesting life and will be remembered fondly. Our deepest sympathies to his lovely family - may his love as father and husband stay Dee in your hearts and his spirit watch over you all in this time of sorrow. GOd bless Stephane and bring him to rest in peace and serenity.

Stephane was like no other in his enjoyment and love of soccer, music, food, friends and family. While I had not seen him in many years - I always remember fondly the time we spent living in Paris together - he was pursuing some crazy idea of somehow being involved with PSG - and did so always with a smile and incredulous hope. We had many evenings looking back at our day laughing with and at each other. He had a heart of gold.

Stephane hired me to teach 5th grade at Casablanca American School and for the time I knew him from 2012 to 2016, he loomed larger-than-life in the world of the school. He was the only person that I think could have taken the reins at such a volatile time. He led with a focus on the big picture, leaving others to sort out the details. This allowed him to remain focused on what was essential, not sidetracked with trivialities. Working for Stephane meant becoming part of his family, and joining him at his home for dinner, drinks and music. It meant hearing stories of his childhood, of packing to go 'on vacation' only to find he was moving to a new country. Of professional sports, and injuries. Of presidential haircutting, real estate deals and the many life experiences that led him around the globe to CAS. Staff meetings with Stephane often involved him sharing his love of cuisine, and if you were lucky he would make his famous paella over the grill, and perhaps break out his collection of guitars and maybe even play "Hotel California." Most importantly, I remember Stephane as a loving dad who adored his girls Charlotte and Caroline, and his then-wife Claire. He had a bemused sense of wonder that he had ended up with such smart, amazing women in his life. I remember Stephane as a man who loved people, and who taught me a lot about leadership. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with him and I send my sincere condolences to his family and those who love him. I am including some photos from my time in Morocco. "He was a man. Take him for all in all, I shall not look upon his like again." -William Shakespeare, Hamlet

When I think of Stéphane I think of the number one rule in improvisation: yes and. Always say yes… and. As I went through every picture from my time in Vilnius with Stéphane I recognized something very valuable: that was a good community that came together for anything and everything. I have tons of pictures of books, tie dye, concerts, dinners, nights at artistai, book clubs, gala type events and at the root of all of those events was Stéphane. He said yes because he knew that a school was nothing without community. He knew that ultimately, life comes down to family, friendship and good times had by all. The two photos I have included are some of the few I have of Stéphane but I promise you he is there. He is in the donations in the book fair tables, he is in every guest author who visited for book week/month, he is the in the shelves of all the libraries built in my time at AISV, he is Fly Guy, the most popular book at AISV. Does he look like a penis? Sure. Did I spend 5 hours making it? Yes I did. And he said yes and Where do you want me to sit? And he read to the kids as fly guy and they were in such shock that a costume of a fly was in the room they said next to nothing while he read, which was a kind of miracle for that class. Stéphane looms large in my memory because a lot of bosses say come in and they don’t mean it. Stephane did and I walked in a lot and asked for a lot of things. He said yes and what do you think. He said yes and you’re doing a great job, slow down. I remember calling my mom the first time he told me I was doing a great job. It must have been my first month and I knew I was in a good place because he didn’t have to say anything and I would have kept running and running but instead he said I was doing a great job and to stop trying to be everything, everywhere all at once. He is the head of school I was forever nagging and loving. He said: we are going to do a show at a club on ausros vartu and you’re going to sing because we need some teachers and some happiness and because he always showed up for me I said yes. As I look back and continue to look back on those wonderful years I know that he set me up. He saw something in me and pushed me forward and set me up with some of the greatest colleagues and best friends I will ever have. I will be forever grateful to Stéphane. My life wouldn’t be what it is without him, of that much I am sure.
