Souvenirs

I've had a really hard time. I am a hard-drinking depressive.

Richard Thomas O'Sullivan was born on 7 May 1944 in Chiswick, west London, the son of John, a garage mechanic, and Ellen (née Fleming). From the earliest age it was clear he possessed a rare and natural gift for performance — that cheeky grin, that lopsided smile, that unmistakable twinkle in his eye. He made his screen debut at just eight years old in The Yellow Balloon (1953), embarking on one of British television's most remarkable journeys from child star to adult comedy icon. His boyhood stage training at the Corona Stage Academy was followed by a striking appearance at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon at the age of twelve. Through the late 1950s and 1960s, he amassed credits on both the large and small screen, appearing alongside Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra (1963) and featuring in two beloved Cliff Richard musicals, The Young Ones (1961) and Wonderful Life (1964). The 1970s brought the roles that would define him. After making his mark in the medical comedies Doctor at Large (1971) and Doctor in Charge (1972–73), he stepped into the part of Robin Tripp — a trainee chef sharing a flat with two single women — in ITV's Man About the House (1973–1976). The series broke social taboos, drew huge audiences, and inspired the American sitcom Three's Company starring John Ritter. The subsequent spin-off Robin's Nest (1977–1981), in which Robin runs a bistro alongside his girlfriend Vicky, drew audiences of up to 19 million and became the first British sitcom to feature an unmarried couple cohabiting. Richard also composed the show's theme tune. He proved his dramatic range as the swashbuckling title character in Dick Turpin (1979–1982), and later charmed a new generation as Simon Harrap in Me and My Girl (1984–1988). Beyond the screen, Richard was an accomplished pianist and an enthusiastic cook — passions he shared with the world through two recipe books, Man About the Kitchen and Roastin' with Richard (both 1980). A loyal Chelsea supporter, he also played football regularly for charity, once breaking his leg in the process. Privately shy and fiercely protective of his personal life, he described himself as happiest in his own company. In 2003, a severe stroke brought his performing career to a close, and he made his home at Brinsworth House, the Royal Variety Charity's retirement residence in Twickenham, where he lived for twenty-three years surrounded by care and affection. His son James later described him as "kind-spirited and good-humoured" — words that capture perfectly a man whose warmth radiated far beyond any television screen. Richard O'Sullivan died peacefully on 4 September 2026 at Brinsworth House, surrounded by his close family. He was 82. He leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, a generation of fans who grew up laughing with him, and a legacy as one of the most naturally gifted comic actors British television has ever produced.

My dad was as funny and charming in real life as he appeared on our TV screens over the years. Always kind-spirited, good-humoured, a doting grandfather and a wonderful dad – I will miss him dearly.
