Obituary of Laura Knight Atkins

Laura Knight Atkins, grandmother of Carl and Oscar Streifeneder, mother of Kathleen Feagin Streifeneder and Christopher Eugene Blacker, and wife of Jesse Atkins, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, April 6, 2021, in Santa Fe, at the age of 72.

Laura was an optimist, believing that things could be better.  She was a doer, taking action to make things better.  She had a lifelong curiosity about the world around her, an untiring sense of adventure, and a profound love of the outdoors. She had the courage of her convictions:  in the face of adversity she would dig in and most often overcome.  Her strengths of character were many, and they ran deep:  boundlessly energetic, fearless, honest, straightforward, determined, poised, unpretentious, approachable compassionate, and fiercely devoted to her children and grandchildren.

Laura made the most of the life that was given to her.  After graduating from Roswell High School, she attended New Mexico State University for a time and ultimately graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering from Tulane University in New Orleans in 1976.  She was a trailblazer at a time when there were very few women in the engineering field, launching a successful professional career that spanned more that two decades and took her everywhere in the world—Alaska, Texas, China, India, Venezuela, Dubai. During the course of her career she also raised daughter Kathleen and brought into the world and raised son Christopher.

New challenges always beckoned to Laura.  When her working career came to a close, Laura decided to reinvent herself as “something other than an engineer”.  With that aim in mind, she enrolled in the mid-career program at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, graduating in 2001 with a master’s degree in Public Administration.

That achievement opened new horizons.  Laura found a unique opportunity and signed on for a three year stint with the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, (OPEC) in Vienna.  Vienna was her kind of town:  beautiful setting, overflowing with all kinds of music . . . and close to some good hiking and skiing.

And then it was on to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she became an independent energy consultant, advising US-based companies.  The consulting business was intensive, but Laura still found time to tour Argentina from top to bottom and take in a tango lesson or two. In 2010, it was back to Texas, this time Houston.  There she worked for an energy publishing and consulting outfit, until retirement in 2015, when she and Jesse moved to Santa Fe.

True to form, retirement didn’t slow her up at all.  In addition to seeing her grandsons as often as she could and traveling frequently, she was active in the League of Women Voters, RepresentUS and other civic organizations.  She maintained close contact with her family and extensive network of friends, and she authored a novel.  With Santa Fe as a base, she was able to hike and ski and snowshoe and generally savor the beauty of New Mexico, the state she always considered home.

In October of 2020 she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.  With the help of the University of New Mexico Cancer Center, she fought it all the way, with dignity, grace, and humor.   Her last round of chemotherapy ended on Monday, March 29, 2021.  It looked as if she had beaten the leukemia.  She was making plans.  Sadly, it was not to be.  A common bacterial infection overwhelmed her immune system weakened by chemotherapy and proved fatal.  On Easter Sunday she began to show symptoms of infection.  By Tuesday afternoon, April 6 she was gone.

The memory of Laura Knight Atkins’ strength, courage, and love will carry us through these hard times and into brighter ones to come.

I'm so sad to hear about Laura and I remember the first time I met Laura in Vienna. When she arrived in Vienna, my friend and Laura's host Marie-France had two tickets for a concert in the Musikverein but could not go and asked me to invite Laura. I didn't know Laura and whether she was interested in classical music. It was an enjoyable evening with her and a wonderful Viennese friendship began. I'm sad she left us so early and I feel deeply with Jesse. Viele Grüße aus Wien Renate

Laura was one of my best friend at the Kennedy School. She was so soft, gentle, and kind. She had a wonderful smile and was already ready to help and to contribute to challenging thoughts. Her passing away is a shock. I can not forget the wonderful time spent in her company and with her husband Jesse. We had so many laughs. I can hear her soft voice, see her sparkling eyes. Laura, we will miss you so much. Thank you for your friendship, your advices and your love.

What great memories with our expat friends from Cairo days traveling to Berlin! Wining, dining and topping it off with a first rate Mark Knopfler concert! Here we are at on the rooftop dining of the Reichstag thanks to Jesse's organizing this most special event! Fast forward to the present where we have resided in Santa Fe with Laura and Jesse the past 2 years. How we will miss our incredibly beautiful, gracious, witty and brilliant friend Laura. Many times together with Jesse and Laura sharing stories and always an abundance of warm friendship and laughter! Over the course of her illness, Laura and I spoke one way or another nearly daily. And a few times, Pat and I were lucky to visit a bit at a distance. These conversations and met ups will forever remain close to our hearts. Our deepest condolences to Jesse, Katie and Chris and their families. With much love, Pat and Jane Brennan

As a co-director with Laura on the Board of Represent Us New Mexico, I was inspired and deeply appreciative of Laura's strong steadfast spirit. She was responsive to and supportive of any question or need I had. I greatly appreciated how she seemed to keep a clear headed perspective about any issue, while also standing for what she believed in and balancing her life with both her concerns and everything she loved. I miss her open mindedness, her directness, her calm and soothing persona, and believe her spirit continues on in higher and joyful realms. I wish comforting blessings on her family as they grieve.

I was not lucky enough to have known Laura but for brief periods in Cairo and Vienna and Italy. I have some warm memories of Laura and my friend Jesse which I will cherish forever. Last time I was in contact with Laura I found the answers were not coming back so fast. I know why now, Laura never mentioned her status to me. The wonderful dinners in Vienna and her personal invitations in Cairo revealed Laura as an experienced professional and a natural explorationist in her attitude and her interests beside being an engineer and a excellent cook. I wish I had known Laura longer. I am sorry I could not meet her again after Cairo and she has left a big void. So sorry for her loss. Our most felt condolences from all of us; Linda, Cindy and Gabriele.

Two weeks have gone and my heart is still crying. What a loss for all of us. Last time we spoke, we still made plans to meet somewhere after the pandemy is over and you recover. And suddenly you were gone. I am so thankfull we met in Vienna, so many years ago and became such friends, you were always ready to enjoy good moments. To know you brought me so much joy. You were full of energy and so communicative. We shared travel thru Argentina and later in France. I am blessed that you, Laura, were a part of my life. You will be in my heart forever. My deepest condolences to Jesse, Christopher, Katherine and her children
