Souvenirs

June (Beazer) Webster peacefully passed away February 17, 2021 at the age of 100. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 63 years, Fenton Webster, in January 2002.

June was born October 28, 1920 in Beazer, Alberta. She was the second of ten children born to Delbert and Vinnie Beazer. She is predeceased by her brother Scott, as well as sisters Ruby and Joyce, and survived by sisters Ellen and Hazel and brothers Harry, Heber, Gerald, and Murray.

June loved growing up on the family ranch in the small tight knit community of Beazer. She told many stories of her childhood adventures with her brothers and sisters riding her horse through the hills, swimming in Lee Creek, and sleigh riding down those same hills in winter when the snow was good.

She loved to take the drive from Cardston to Beazer and marveled at the short 10 to 15 minutes the trip now takes. As a child, she remembered many trips on that same road from Beazer to Cardston and back by horse and buggy or sleigh. It would usually take 2 or 3 hours each way and was often accompanied by a cool breeze or cold wind.

June attended elementary through high school in Beazer. She was a good athlete and was a member of many school and community softball and basketball teams. She attended post-secondary school at the Banff School of Fine Arts. June loved the arts and painted with watercolours, a passion which she has passed on to her children and grandchildren.

In December of 1939, June married Fenton Webster of Mountain View, Alberta. June and Fenton moved onto the Webster ranch near Mountain View which would be her home until 2000, when she and Fenton moved to Cardston.

June and Fenton raised a family of nine children on the ranch at Mountain View. June is survived by her children: Gaye, Barbara, Peggy, Joyce, Melanie, Julie, Jon, Wendel, and Allen. Two of June’s children, Karen and John Nolan, were deceased shortly after their birth.  June and Fenton were hard workers, as ranch families are, and her family still marvels at the memory of unending tasks she would complete on a daily basis.

June and Fenton were able to purchase a winter home in St. George, Utah in 1985.  St. George was her little heaven on earth. She spoke tenderly of the times they spent there with good friends who would visit and relatives who also lived there including three of her children (Joyce, Melanie, and Allen) and their families.

June was an amazing cook and was known far and wide for her stretch candy, made for Christmas and special occasions.

Golf is a beloved activity of the Webster family. June became an expert golfer and won many trophies and medals in local, provincial, and international events.

June was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints all her life. She enjoyed the fellowship of her many friends, neighbours and family who shared her faith. June and Fenton served at the Cardston LDS Temple in their later years, of which she often spoke and greatly enjoyed.

June was the beloved matriarch of her large family. At this time she has a total of 11 children, 38 grandchildren, 71 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.

A virtual memorial service will be live streamed at 1:00 PM Wednesday, February 24, 2021. A link for the virtual service can be found on the Legacy Funeral Home website www.legacyfuneralhome.ca.

This is a letter written by Grandma June Dec 4th 2005. She was up at Julie and Kellys for Christmas. What is great about being “old”. Loving and holding grandchildren and great grandchildren without the “care of them”. Life is change- every time I see my family who live far away, they have changed or grown. My mirror shocks me. I have changed- the law of nature. I remember our first telephone on the wall in Beazer. A wonderful new invention. Mother could talk to Grandma in Aetna. Now they send letters and pictures thousands of miles away in a few seconds. “Amazing”, and everyone can have a cell phone. My family wait on me and I let them. I am old? I can be first in line because I am a “senior”. I can forget names, that’s expected because of my age. Going to the temple becomes my “work” - I enjoy, I have time to read and ponder. My vote is still important- so I am important. I have many memories- I choose not to dwell on the struggles, failures, and hurts, but the happy times, being loved, a mother many times- but not understanding “this gift” of life or why “these” choice spirits came to us. I am comforted thinking of my “heritage”, mother and father, grandmas and grandfathers - their struggles and sacrifices that we would live in this free land we call “Zion”. This trial of life, coming, living, going on an eternal plan - I have time to marvel and meditate with wonder. I am amazed at the beauties of nature. Love flowers, trees, birds, and animals.Rainbows!! But I see the power of the laws of nature in the rains, winds and hurricanes. I search for the “power” faith has -thankful for my Savior -for his gift of love and his sacrifice for me. I feel such a sense of my own fulfillment in the achievements of my children and grandchildren when they create and excel. Thank you. I can give advice -“be the best that you can” because I have lived a long time, I should have learned?? Maybe! If I get “a par” a surprise, because I’m not expected to score well. But I will protest “loudly” if they try to tell me I can’t drive my car! I can accept grey hair, reading glasses, cataracts removed, metal in my knees, new hearing aides, living in a seniors villa residence, but I miss my love, my life partner so much. But life goes on, I count my blessings and give thanks -tears of joy come easily, but is allowed, my years have earned them. Love and live well my dear ones. It’s now Christmas 2005. I was born in 1920 and I’m still healthy. It is great being old. Love Grandma June

Nine days before the lockdowns in 2020 I had a strong impression to go visit the grandmas in cardston. I’m so glad I followed that inspiration as this was our last family visit together. I remember thinking what a good grip she had as she held my hand tight! Her great grandchildren adored her and Jax got to play a few songs on his fiddle for Her.

“Here I am with my 100 year old great grandma. I got to be a part of her birthday parade. I really like that my name is Webster like her and that our family likes to golf...just like me!”

I have so many great pictures of Mom over the years as we all do. She was very photogenic! The thing that stands out right now the most after going through so many pictures is how much she loved her camera as she got older. She never went for a ride with us without her purse and her camera. We developed a lot of photos at Value Drug Mart. Those years were so special for me as she would drive her little black car down to Main Street and park in front of the store. She loved to come on the days I worked until 2:00 and then we would drive off with our cameras and head for the hills. In the summer it was to the golf course, and she was still playing ladies league! Those were great years!!

I have so many fond memories of Grandma! Things that stand out…going for rides on Nelly for picnic lunches down by the river, baking cookies, hotcakes with chokecherry jelly, fresh bread & rolls, picking & eating strawberries in the garden, golfing & driving the golf cart (I remember the summer I stayed with her when I was 9 or 10, she would introduce me to her friends on the golf course: “this is my granddaughter Marni Jo, she’s my chauffeur!”), basketball games (uncles Jon, Wendel, Allen & my brother Greg’s), oh, and homemade root beer! My first driving lesson was from Grandma in one of the farm trucks on the ranch – I think I was 13 and I drove from the house to the quonset (first time behind the wheel was actually uncle Jon & Grandpa having me steer the truck as it coasted in the old field while they picked up/stacked hay bales). Grandma also taught me to saddle a horse and was so patient to let me sit in the saddle while she sat behind it because I was too scared to ride alone or sit behind the saddle (the one time I can remember being told “no” was the request to put 2 saddles on the horse!) It always amazed me that with all her children and grandchildren, I could call her on the phone and just say “Hi Grandma” and she would immediately recognize my voice and say “Oh, Marni Jo!” She was also so welcoming to anyone we brought to visit. The first time I brought Darin to the ranch to meet her I remember her giving him a hug, which he awkwardly accepted…it didn’t take long before he was the one hugging her first when we arrived! I also remember her chasing after my boys when they were young – running around the house in Cardston playing, she must have been in her 80’s already. She was always so full of life and happy to have us around. Grandma June was such a kind, gentle, loving woman who never had anything bad to say about anyone. She has been an exemplary model of what we should all aspire to be and I have been blessed to have known her and to call her “Grandma.”
