8 septembre 1927 - 27 avril 2020
John R. Grove of Duchess Ab passed away peacefully on April 27, 2020 at the age of 92 after a short illness. John was born in Ringwood, Ontario on September 8, 1927, where he grew up on the family farm. In 1948 at the age of 21, he and two friends headed out west in his 1930 Model A. He landed at Duchess Ab where he went to work and soon met his future wife Melita Friesen. They were married in October 1950 at the Duchess Mennonite Church where John remained a lifetime member. Four sons and a daughter followed. John worked at the Duchess Garage in the fifties, later farmed, and was employed at the Brooks Hospital. In the 1970s, John served on the board for Mennonite Central Commitee and Mennonite Disaster Service for a total of eleven years. In 1977 John and Melita volunteered with Mennonite Disaster Service working Big Thompson Canyon Flood recovery in Colorado. After this they served at Grace Childrens Hospital in Haiti with International Child Care. He also started Grove Construction. He mostly enjoyed building churches; eight in total. In 2003, they moved to Medicine Hat Chinook Village. After 61 years marriage, in January 2012, Melita went to be with Jesus. In 2013 John moved to Newbrook Lodge in Brooks, then to Sunrise Gardens until his passing. He enjoyed the friendships developed in these retirement homes and was grateful for the care. John enjoyed working hard, gardening, and serving those in need. He had a steadfast, unwavering faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.
Predeceased by parents Ezra and Susanna Grove, son Joe in 1972, and daughter Debra Lantz in 2001. Survived by brother Albert Grove(Judy), sisters Ellen Burkholder and Anne Mason, all of Ontario. Sons Gordon(Karen), Albert(Susan), and Tom(Joanne). Grandchildren Shane, BJ, Janna, Daryl, Trevor, Joe, Karla, Chase, and Destinee and many great grandchildren.

From Shane Grove: On a visit last summer Grandpa asked to go for a ride. He never asked before or after. Bought him a coffee and went for a cruise.

From Shane Grove: A few things about my Grandpa. 1) wouldn’t drink cold water on hot days. At a meal sure. But if you were working in the heat you had to drink warm water. Like pretty warm. And he was a little touchy if you wanted cold water. 2) as a throw back to his Mennonite ways he didn’t like Christmas lights but as a concession to my Grandma he relented. But not red. Couldn’t have red Christmas lights. I’m not one to ever judge another’s convictions but I don’t think any passerby would get the wrong idea if you had red Christmas lights.
Dave & Esther Friesen

Gayl mentioned the doll house. Well here's the rest of the story. John and Melita were visiting us in late fall and showed us a picture of the doll house Uncle John Visser had handcrafted and donated to the MCC Alberta sale. They talked about how well built it was complete with furniture in typical Visser craftsmanship. John G was a craftsman in his own right and his opinion mattered to me. I said, "it would be a shame if it got out of the family." Both John and Melita said they agreed with that. Esther and I gave it no further thought until we came for the family reunion the next summer. We were having dinner with John & Melita and after dessert John said he wanted to show me something he had in the garage. Ok, out we went. Lo and behold, the doll house. John says, "I understood you to say it would be a shame for this to get out of the family, so I bid on it for you and got it. That's what you meant, right?" What could I say but, "Sure exactly what I meant." How much do I owe you?" After settling up, John, Brian and I (mostly John) built a solid box around the doll house to withstand the rigors of shipping. Now how to get it the 2,500 miles to PA. The freight companies and airlines wanted more to ship it that the doll house cost. Tom graciously offered to store it in his machine shop until I could come with my van to pick it up which wasn't going to happen for a while. About 8 months later I get a call from Gordon. "Uncle Dave, I just sold a truck to an individual who is coming to Ephrata, Pennsylvania and he's willing to transport the doll house, if you want." Ephrata is only 50 miles away and that would be a lot easier to do than the otherwise 2,500 miles. So sure, lets go with that. We chatted a little bit and just before we ended the call Gordon says, "Oh I told the person that it would be worth a few bucks to Uncle Dave to have him bring the doll house to PA. Ok?" Like father, like son, what could I say but, "Sure, exactly my thoughts." It all worked out great, the doll house is still in the family and soon ready to be enjoyed by a fourth generation, our great granddaughter, Lochlyn. This would not have happened without John's initiative. Thank you John and Melita, Tom and Gordon.

From Shane Grove: After his retirement he would go to the dump and scrounge through the garbage and look for useful things. He also would hike along the fence lines outside the Golf Course looking for golf balls. I told him if he wanted he could look in the ditch for bottles. Why not? Well he was a little offended. “ What, looking in the ditches like a hobo?” Sorry Grandpa.

From Robin Roth: One of my most fondness memories, Uncle John came out and help our Dad (Lyle Roth) build are dairy barn.Uncle John was a man of integrity and always had that friendly grin, also enjoyed his company and kitchen visits, Uncle John also help Salem Build the addition to the chruch he sure was a kingdom builder down here on earth.
