I knew Jerod briefly in college and then a little more later on when he became good friends with one of my best friends. My favorite memory of Jerod is from college when we were both in the same econometric analysis class. We had been preparing for a mid-term or final or something and our professor provided us a few formulas so that we didn't have to memorize them for the test. I had convinced myself that a couple of the formulas the professor provided could actually be combined to answer one of the 4 long-form questions on the test without having to do any real work. Though I didn't know why it worked, just that it did. So I was having a disagreement with one of our classmates about it because they didn't believe our professor would be either unaware of this possibility or make a mistake that allowed us to basically bypass 25% of that test, which was worth a substantial portion of our overall grade in the class. Jerod overheard us talking about it and came over and started doing what to me seemed like magic on the page, but to him was just 'math', and he was actually able to prove that I was correct. I was amazed by his skill, confidence, and ability to communicate. From what I can tell he carried all those qualities into every area of his life, and I'm sure I'm one of many people who will remember those qualities in him.

Dear friends and loved ones here have beautifully chronicled Jerod the man. Equally inspiring was -- and always will be -- the set of ideas and values that Jerod represented. He had a gift, in particular, for defying cliques and eluding archetypes and becoming, quite literally, whoever he set out to be. Jerod aced exams and scored touchdowns; wrote treatises on price theory and alt-rock Orwell-inspired riffs; and donned cowboy boots and Oxford subfusc with equal panache. He was a natural-born leader and yet someone who cared little for the spotlight or artifice. In both his life and his passing he is, in short, an ideal I will always hold up, showing by example what it means to be a man, partner, artist, athlete, and leader -- and above all, a friend.

I just found out about Jerod's passing today and I'm heartbroken. I was one of Jerod's Profs at OU. He was a great student and one of the great OU success stories. More importantly, he was a pleasure to work with and a great friend to many. May perpetual light shine upon him.

Jerod was one of the smartest, kindest, and funniest students I've ever taught at the University of Oklahoma. I supported his pursuits of the Marshall Award and the Carl Albert Award with letters of recommendation back in 2012/13 - both honors he won. When I re-read those letters now, I can see they are the strongest/best I've ever celebrated a student's talent, ability, and impact, but they still don't come close to doing Jerod's uniqueness & brilliance justice. He was one in a million. Also, I can't help but think about how he always talked about Emily as being so perfect & special to him -- she is another one in a million type person -- must have been some special divine plan that brought these two incredible souls together for the first time. Meeting his parents at the Carl Albert Award Ceremony, and then getting a chance to throw Jerod 2 TD passes in a pickup football game organized by Cindy Rogers and Steve Ellis (mutual friends) - these were highlights of my memories with Jerod. The best memories though were from teaching him Public Economics - he was possibly the smartest & most motivated student I've ever interacted with. I promise you that every single student in the class he took with me had a better experience because of Jerod - his questions & comments were among the best facilitators of critical thinking & learning I've experienced while at OU. Yesterday the OU College of Art's & Sciences sent an email out to faculty calling for Nominations for the College's "Top Young Alumni Award" - an honor that goes to the most impactful CAS grad from the last ten years. I opened my folder for recommendation letters, saw that Jerod's were all from 2012/13 - perfect timing - I decided it might be a great idea to nominate Jerod. I searched my emails - saw it had been a couple of years since we interacted. The last time was a few year ago when Jerod was writing letters of support FOR ME as I was pursuing a few teaching/research related Honors/Awards (which I did win a few of ----- Jerod's letter probably helped!). Since I didn't see anything recent, I went to google for updates (a go-to GenXer move), and then about 10 seconds later I was reading through this MyKeeper memorial. I am still in shock to be honest, this is the first I had learned the news. I got a little emotional telling my wife Stephanie about how the world lost Jerod last night. She mentioned how sad she was for Emily to lose a great love, and how many people would have been positively impacted by Jerod's kindness and generosity had he lived longer. I am reaching out to a few people I know around OU/CAS. To me it seems like there needs to be a special Award Honor that goes out in Jerod's name annual. Jerod and I always had a special connection because we were both 1st-Gen college grads in our families....maybe some sort of connection to that. OU Econ has been blessed to know many brilliant and caring students over the years. Jerod was a star that shined as one of the brightest in this special group. He will be missed - but like other bright stars - passing from this world can't put out the flame of his memory, or take away the positive impacts he made on others.

The first time I ran an onboarding training in the LA office, we needed someone to be the "CEO" for the final presentations. Jerod stepped in without hesitation, making the time and doing an excellent job in both the role play and the real person feedback at the end. I loved partnering with Jerod as a CD Advisor, a manager working with his team members, and just as someone fun to connect with when I was in LA. It was an honor to share recipes and photos of delicious food with him in his final weeks - the pasta party for Emily's birthday looked incredible. Jerod's presence will be missed even for those who did not get to interact with him frequently. <3
