Gary J. Esses, “The Cam Doctor”

Gary’s love of all things mechanical served him well through many years as a maintenance mechanic for Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District. His hobbies included building loud engines, fast boats, and even faster cars. Countless vehicles in Ohio and beyond continue to run better thanks to Gary. Whether drag racing a Corvette, driving his ’23 T-Bucket to a cruise-in, or on (sometimes under) the water, it is a good bet he was crawling in, on, or under something to fix it. His often gruff exterior was tempered by his kind heart, innocent flirtations, and ever-present sense of humor. We all believe that he is still telling some lovely lady in heaven to “flush twice, I need the overtime!” Gary is survived by the best daughter in the world, Nicole Sedjo, and her amazing husband, his “son” Randy; his incredible grandchildren Ethan Dolfi and Morgan Sedjo; his number one son Mike (Gina) Pray and their wonderful family Zach, Natalie, Carly, and Hailey. He also leaves behind many close friends whom he “adopted” as family along the way.

I met Gary in 1969, another 55 chevy guy, like me, I just stopped by his parents house when i saw him working on his car. To a stranger walking up and saying Hi!, he was very friendly and willing to show me all his stuff! We became friends, working on our cars, and cruisin' the streets of North Olmsted and Cleveland west side. He always had time to BS, and taught this 18 year old kid so much about this car Hobby we were in. His humor and snarkiness was refreshing, never vicious, I am truly sorry that i found out about his passing over a year later, as I am writing down my Memoirs and was just starting on the "Gary Esses Chapter" ! To his Family, my sincerest condolences, and he will always be fondly Remembered by me! Keep shifting that 4-speed, Brother!

My sincerest condolences. Gary was like a second father to me and a huge influence in my life. He taught me so much and I enjoyed so much trying to help him with the t-bucket or the boat, ( even though I didn’t do to much lol) but he’s a big reason I decided to move to Florida to work on boats. I just wish I was around more or picked up the phone and called him more. He was so kind and knowledgeable and that’s what drew me to him as a kid and sparked our friendship. He’s truly going to be missed.

Shared from Jen Way (nee Folkrod): I grew up living next door to this incredibly kind man. Gary was a huge part of my childhood. My favorite memory (by far) is when he used to jump up and down out our kitchen window peek a boo style to say hi to me. It made me laugh every time I saw him make funny faces bouncing in the driveway. My dearest Buddy, fly high with the angels and please, say hi to my dad for me. ❤

Gary was one of the first people my husband and I met when we purchased our condo in Harbor Pointe. He was always smiling and made us feel so welcomed. My husband is a car guy and they loved to talk all things cars and boats. While we only had the privilege of knowing him for a little over one year, he left a huge imprint on our lives and hearts. He will be missed terribly. Until we see you again sweet friend.

Shared with me from Craig Koerpel: I am sorry to learn of your dad's passing. I saw him last at our 50th class reunion and told him this story. I moved to Fairview at the start of my junior year (1961). Your father was one of the first people I met. He sat next to one another in a class. He said it would not be long before I met a lot of people...that Fairview was a friendly school. He gave me a small metal box-like contraption from which you could "fan out" cards that would hold names and phone numbers. I would add information there as I met people and kept that thing in my pocket even through my senior year. Funny how small kindnesses stick with you.
