Never quit!

Dorrance Earnest Funk Jr. — known the world over as Dory Funk Jr. — was born on February 3, 1941, in Hammond, Indiana, and grew up in Amarillo, Texas, in the shadow of a father who was already a legend. Wrestling was the family language, and from his earliest years, Dory dreamed of living it. Before he ever set foot in a ring professionally, he proved himself on the gridiron at West Texas State University, competing on both offensive and defensive lines from 1959 to 1962 and earning a Sun Bowl victory. He was later inducted into the university's Athletics Hall of Fame. On January 10, 1963, Dory made his professional wrestling debut, launching a career that would span more than six decades. Six years into that journey came the moment that defined him: on February 11, 1969, in Tampa, Florida, he defeated Gene Kiniski to win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. He would hold that title for 1,563 consecutive days — four years and three months — the second-longest uninterrupted reign in NWA history. Dave Meltzer, wrestling's foremost historian, called him "the perfect champion," a man who made every opponent, regardless of skill level, look like a world-title contender. He and his younger brother Terry became the only siblings ever to each hold the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. Japan became a second home. Beginning in 1972, Dory made approximately 70 trips to Japan through 1997, working alongside Giant Baba, Antonio Inoki, and Jumbo Tsuruta. He was beloved there in a way that transcended sport. In 1986, he and Terry joined the World Wrestling Federation, defeating Tito Santana and Junkyard Dog at WrestleMania 2. In 2009, they were inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame by their longtime friend Dusty Rhodes. But perhaps Dory's most enduring contribution was as a teacher. The "Dory Funk Method" — built on safety, performance, and television craft — shaped generations of wrestlers. His Funking Conservatory in Ocala, Florida, launched the careers of Edge, Christian Cage, Kurt Angle, the Hardy Boyz, Lita, Mickie James, and Mark Henry, among many others. He held his final professional match in Japan at age 83. Off the mat, Dory was known for something quieter: a gentle smile, a Southern warmth, and a deep love for his community, his animals, and his students. He and his wife Marti, married in 1989, spent their years in Ocala giving back — raising funds for literacy, animal welfare, and those in need. He is survived by Marti, five children, and one grandchild. His signature credo — "Never quit!" — was not a slogan. It was a life.

Dusty Rhodes

They rode out of West Texas on two horses and captivated a whole nation. Captivated a whole continent. Went all the way to Japan, where they erected statues of these two men. They were legendary. You call them icons. They're national treasures.

He, along with Pat Patterson, Tom Prichard and Michael Hayes vouched for my ability. They told the right people, the kid is ready.
