Recuerdos

David Emer Payne, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on June 12, 2020 after a prolonged and valiant battle with cancer. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, March 29, 1944 to John W and Sara Harris Payne and spent a happy childhood in Provo, Utah. He graduated from BY High School and then attended Brigham Young University where he earned a B.S. in sociology. He served faithfully as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the British Mission. He honorably served in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Vietnam War. He earned his Ph.D. in sociology/business administration at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. Following his Ph.D. studies he met and married Grettle Haglund on March 16, 1973 in the Provo, Utah Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Together they raised six children. Their home was filled with love, laughter, music, and service. His career as a professor and administrator at several universities concluded with his 14-year tenure as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Sam Houston State University where he introduced many new programs and innovations and left many friends. During his career, he was recognized as a leader in higher education both on the local and national level. David was a faithful member and lifelong leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many callings including Bishop and Stake President. He was known for his loving temperament, his kindness, and his service to others. He lived by the scriptural admonition to "love one another and serve one another" and the Sam Houston State motto "The measure of a life is its service." He is survived by his brother William Dennison Payne, his sister Maralin Bennett, his wife Grettle, six children: Sara Elizabeth Anderson (Adam), John David Payne (JaNae), Samuel Harris Payne (Mollie), Daniel Joseph Payne (Christina), James Richard Payne (Regent), David Emer Payne II (Kate), and 26 grandchildren. A graveside service for immediate family will be held in Provo, Utah and a memorial service will be held in Huntsville, Texas at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the David and Grettle Payne Endowed Music Scholarship at Sam Houston State University (936-294-3604 or https://www.shsu.edu/dept/university-advancement/donate.html ) or to Latter-day Saint Charities which, as modeled by Jesus Christ, seeks "to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, take in the stranger, clothe the naked and visit the sick and afflicted" ( https://www.latterdaysaintcharities.org ).

The first time I met David was over the phone when I asked him if I could marry his only daughter. At the time, I had no idea what I was asking. He went silent; I knew he had his doubts about a kid from Las Vegas, where Wayne Newton was from. But then Grettle told me he was weeping. That kind of gentle response was typical over the next 20 years that I knew him. The last time I saw him, he went out of his way to spend time teaching my kids to drive a manual transmission and even watch some basketball with my boys. We'll miss him but are glad to know he'll live again.

One of my favorite memories of grandpa was the second to last time I visited his house. There was a special event going on at SHSU. There was a motivational speaker who was talking about his football career and there was a luncheon to follow. He knew that I loved sports so he took me, even though I was only 10ish. After the speaker we sat down to lunch and he picked a table in the back to sit with me, when a waiter came up and told him he was supposed to sit at the main table with the speaker and some other important people. I remember him looking surprised but pleased. At the table he introduced me to everyone including the speaker! After the luncheon we drove home and we talked about the speaker and if I liked him, since it was about sports. I told him I did and he said he was very happy for me. There are many other experiences I could share but this was my favorite one that was just me and him.

Some of my earliest memories of Grandpa are listening to him tell scripture stories--for some reason I specifically remember him telling me about Daniel and the Lion's den and telling Adam, Mark, Harrison, and me the story of Dennis Harris so we would know how Harrison got his name. I remember "helping" grandpa in his garden sometimes. I was so proud when we harvested radishes and wanted to eat them right away. I was too excited to remember that I don't like radishes very much. I also loved learning to drive the tractor and remember how he had me weave in and out of the fruit trees for practice. Earlier this year he was so patient teaching me how to drive stick shift in his red truck. I felt like I was learning to drive all over again! I am so grateful to be the granddaughter of someone who was such a stalwart example of righteous living, kindness, and hard work. Abby

Rab Anderson (Grandson): I remember when Grandpa killed a snake that we found in the wood pile. Jack saw it first, he picked up a piece of wood and there was a snake laying there. Everyone came and Grandpa brought a shovel and he started to kill the snake. Then our Dad went and got the machete from the garage and started to help kill it with that. Grandpa used the shovel to hold the snake in place and then picked it up and flung the snake into the fire we had going nearby. He waited until after we all got our photos and stuff in.

I loved it when Grandpa told us stories of his past. My favorite stories were when he took out his box of trinkets and his swords and explained how he got all of them. I particularly remember when he told us a story about the swords and let us draw them out of the sheath and handle them. I also remember even when Grandpa was battling cancer, he still took time to go out side with us. He did not play, but he still came out and watched us horse around even though it was really hard for him to do that. I really appreciate all that Grandpa did for me and I know Grandpa was a great man and I am very glad to have been apart of his life.

He will be dearly missed by my family. Such a kind human being. I always enjoyed his monthly visits to my office on campus, just to say hi and see how I was doing.
