Candy was one of the first people I met after moving to Florida and was the first real friend. We always kidded about how much older she was (14 days), and always claimed to be so much wiser. She made the best lobster salad - brining it to the boat to sail. She sailed with us until she moved to Sanford - i regret not seeing her more. i found two pictures - she had the best smile.

And then, there was the time when we just didn't feel like racing the afore-mentioned sailboat on a race day. We always came in last, and lacked any motivation whatsoever. Plus, we'd just spend the time arguing and complaining. So that one time, we decided to take a nap in the boat. Dicey, given how mad her dad would be if he found out we didn't race. After covering ourselves with the tarp and settling in for a snooze, we heard a motor getting very close. Busted by the lake patrol. No nap, no race, and plenty of harsh words from her dad. We didn't come in last that day, at least. Best friends.

When Candy & I were about 13 yrs old and very bored one afternoon THE DAY BEFORE OUR 8TH GRADE PHOTOS, we were in her parents' bedroom, talking aimlessly and trying to figure out something to do. In Candy's hand was one of those tiny metal cars that you 'zoom zoom' on a surface and then release and watch skitter away. For some reason, Candy decided to zoom zoom it and release it onto the top of my head. An hour later, her mom finally had to cut out a chunk of my hair to release that stupid car. I was photographed the next day with a 2-inch tuft of hair sticking straight up in the air. But still... best friends.

Later in our adolescence, Candy allowed me to sail the family sailboat--a mediocre decision, given my complete lack of experience. She straddled the pointy part of the boat (see how much I STILL don't know about sailboats?!) to catch the dock as I sailed it in. Figuring I shouldn't go straight in, I angled it nicely & slowly, but didn't factor in her dangling leg. I'm sure the scars remained for the rest of her life. I guess she thought it was payback for the 8th grade photo mishap. Still... best friends.
