Our foreign policy cannot be based on one issue. We must consider several factors just like the senior Kenyatta did.

Burudi Nabwera was a towering figure in Kenya's post-independence history — a diplomat, legislator, and public servant whose life of nearly a century traced the full arc of the nation he helped build. Born in 1927 in North Kavirondo, the region now known as Webuye, he came from the Tachoni tribe of the Luhya community. His name, Burudi, derived from the Kiswahili adaptation of "baruti," meaning gunpowder — a fitting name for a man who would carry Kenya's voice onto the world stage with quiet force. He lost his mother at the age of ten, yet pressed forward with a determination that would carry him from rural Western Kenya to the corridors of the United Nations. Nabwera received his secondary education at Maseno School, pursued undergraduate studies at Makerere University, and went on to earn a degree in sociology from the London School of Economics — where he studied alongside a young Mwai Kibaki, who would later become President of Kenya. He began his professional life as a teacher, first at Maseno School and then at Alliance Girls' High School, where he taught Kiswahili. On December 11, 1963 — just days after Kenya's independence — Nabwera boarded a plane for New York. He became Kenya's first Ambassador to the United States and first Permanent Representative to the United Nations simultaneously, representing the country across all of the Americas. He served in this dual role until 1970, helping to shape Kenya's non-aligned foreign policy during one of the most consequential periods of the Cold War. Returning home, Nabwera entered domestic politics during the Daniel arap Moi era, serving as Minister of State in the Office of the President and later as Secretary-General of the Kenya African National Union (KANU). In 1988, he became the founding Member of Parliament for the newly created Lugari Constituency, holding the seat until 1992. Later, he served as Chairman of the Nzoia Sugar Company from 2007 to 2010. In retirement, he became a farmer in Kitale — tending bananas, maize, sunflowers, and dairy cattle — and served as a village elder. Burudi Nabwera passed away on October 9, 2026, at the age of 99, leaving behind 55 years of public service and a legacy that belongs not only to Western Kenya, but to the Kenyan nation he helped introduce to the world.

Saddened by the passing of Mzee Burudi Nabwera, a respected elder who offered me valuable guidance in my service as MP for Kiminini and in my aspiration for Trans Nzoia governor. His wisdom and counsel will be greatly missed.
