Obituary as written by her grandaughter (Jan 2021) in honor of her Grammy
Alba Maria Basden will be remembered for her lead foot and adventurous spirit. Born in 1941 to a Black Army veteran and a Puerto Rican woman who later became one of the first female Hispanic principals to serve the greater Tucson area, Alba’s parents were exceptional for their time and they raised their daughter as such.
Growing up in Champagne, Illinois, Alba dreamed of traveling the world from a young age. She enlisted in the Air Force at the age of 18 but chose to put her dreams on pause a year later when she became pregnant with her first child. A few years, two husbands and two divorces later, Alba was a single mother caring for three children, plus one or two other youngsters who stayed with her off-and-on. When money was scarce, Alba sewed their clothes herself and ate Lifesavers for dinner to ensure there was enough food on the table for everyone else. Although fiercely devoted in her role as the family’s matriarch, Alba never stopped yearning for a life of adventure. Once her children were grown, she earned a degree in accounting and joined the civil service. The day her first grandchild was born, she called to offer congratulations from her new apartment 7,000 miles away in Turkey.
While overseas, Alba sent her children necklaces she had picked up from bazaars in Egypt and enthralled her grandchildren with stories about how she had seen “the real Trojan horse” in Greece. Years later, with a glint in her eyes, she would recount how one of her colleagues had attempted to flatter his way into her front door after too many after-work cocktails in Jerusalem. Alba’s second act was everything she had dreamed it would be.
After retiring in Arizona to be near family, Alba resumed her most-cherished hobby of knitting and sewing. She handmade the dresses for her daughter’s wedding party, as well as the dress that her granddaughter wore to her first homecoming dance. In her spare time, Alba also volunteered at Mesa Arts Center and enjoyed listening to country music. She once accidentally drove 20 miles in the wrong direction because a “really good Garth Brooks song came on the radio,” and could get from Mesa to Tucson in an hour flat. Even after getting busted by the highway patrol for speeding on the 79, Alba would brag that she could sweet-talk any state trooper into letting her off with a warning. Alba lived a full and happy life to the very end. Her deep laugh and “lorrrd have mercy” will be missed.
Alba died on January 17, 2021 from complications sustained after testing positive for COVID-19 in late October 2020. She is survived by three children – Denise Maria Willard, Kevin Mark Basden, and Adrienne Renee Basden – three grandchildren – Sabrina Maria Ferguson, Grayson David Willard, and Mitchell Lee Willard – and one great-grandchild – Amara Marie Willard.

From Facebook: Feb 7, 2021 Wow, I am just learning of this lost...Alba when I first met you in 2016, we begin family. Lots of days and late nights we stay up researching our family lineage. Meeting you at our family reunion that year, was one of the greatest moments of my life. You will always be family and a great friend.. Thanks for entering my life...This hurt so much, words can't described and tears want dry up.. God want you back, because your work was done here, that's the only relief I can come to turn with, that you are resting in his presence. You are absent from the body; beauty is you are present with the Lord.. Love You My Cousin; My Friend..

3/16/21 email correspondance Oh Denise, how well I remember your Mom and how sad to know of her last struggles. The obituary write up made her come back in a special way. See how closely our names lined up when the girls were alphabetized?! What a woman.......At Mercy she was a quiet young woman. All that energy was just waiting to find the right place to blossom. Thank you for sharing the sad news with us. I’m not an “officer” of the Class any longer ( nor do I have any official role), but felt moved to contact you. Be well and be safe, and cherish the wonderful spirit you can see in her photo below, Noël Candice, Class of 59, Mercy High, Chicago (March 15, 2021)

Alba, even though I only saw you for a couple of hours each week, I felt like I had known you for a lifetime. You shared your life with humor, openness, and love; and received what we all shared with you in the same way. I've said this before but it was the characteristic I admired most about you — you live life on your own terms. I'm sure in your early years it wasn't as obvious but you made a good life for yourself in a time when that wasn't easy in the world in which we lived. You built yourself a life you could enjoy and live to its fullest and share with all of those that you called friends. I consider it a great honor to have been included in that company in the last years of your incredible life. Thank you so very much Alba for sharing your friendship with me. The memories of you sitting there crocheting or knitting and talking and laughing and welcoming each one of us will always remain with me along with all of the wonderful stories, the gossip, the news, the patterns, or the conversations we all shared. And we did fix all the world's problems after all, didn't we?. I'll miss you, Alba.

From Facebook: Jan 18, 2021 There just aren’t words that will ease the loss of loved ones for those that lost them. For me, I lost a friend last night to COVID and I will miss her. I can be angry at those that don’t understand the importance of keeping a distance, wearing a mask, and protecting others, or I can choose to remember my friend and the good moments. Right now, I feel a bit of both. Our moments sewing and knitting together, laughing, chatting about anything and everything, knitting together and just enjoying the moments of peace will be so missed. My heart hurts for her family and I am saddened the world lost an amazing woman that was an inspiration. She guided me often and gave me strength to try new things and stand up for myself. Alba I will miss you.
