On Thursday, August 20th, 2020, Robert "Bob" Souza passed away at the age of 64 in Tarpon Springs, FL. Bob was born in New Bedford, MA on September 28th, 1955 to Rita and Edward Souza. I had shared this on my facebook and would just prefer to repost: Last night we lost one of the most genuine individuals I have ever had the pleasure to know and work with. He would literally take the shirt off his back (or yours if you weren't careful) to help someone in need. I looked up to him as a mentor and never once caught him not loving what he did at the firehouse. As many of my Brothers and Sisters know, he was my partner in crime when we chased down those dastardly beer thieves in the big white garbage fire truck. Before walking into the Chief's office, I can still remember his words of wisdom. "Muerth, you just keep quiet and let me do the talking. I'm the senior guy, I'll take the hit." I failed to listen to Bob that day. Nonetheless, he was always looking out for others. Another one of my all time favorite memories with Bob, was when we received a call to help police find a homeless person in the woods. Someone had called on this guy for rummaging threw a garbage bin looking for food. A number of us had searched for a while in the woods that evening. Ultimately the search was called off and we headed back to the station. Unbeknownst to me Bob and others had found the guy. He gave him 20 bucks and told him to lay low for awhile until the cops left. He truly believed in live and let live. May you finally rest in peace, Brother.

Whenever I would get a "hookie" day from school, my dad would drive us to the shopping complex where Prawnbroker is in Fort Myers. There was a little oyster restaurant there that had the best clam chowder and fish I've ever had. Dad liked their soft shell crab sandwiches. I wish this place were still open. I dreamed of taking my own son there one day on our own hookie day. I'll be sure to carry on this tradition in his honor. Graham is going to know that his grandpa loved hookie days too.

After Bob's devastating accident he forgot many things, however, he never forgot that he was a firefighter for the City of Cape Coral. He loved wearing his hat and t-shirts. We appreciate all the help his brothers on the department extended to us during a very difficult time. They paid for his rehab at the Fl Institute for Neurological Rehab (FINR). If you knew Bob, you'll get the photos posted. RIP

I must have been maybe 5 or 6 when I was obsessed with Barbra Streisand's One Voice cassette tape. I figured out that at the end of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" I could flip the tape over and my other favorite song would play, "Papa, Can You Hear Me?" I would hear one song, eject the tape, flip it, and play the other song for the duration of all car rides. I'm certain my dad didn't want to listen to another Streisand song ever again because of me. I'll never be able to listen to these songs again without thinking of you, dad. The trees are so much taller and I feel so much smaller. The moon is twice as lonely and the stars are half as bright.
