There have been problems, bad times, but there have been wonderful times. It's just a life, my life.

Lena Martell, born Helen Thomson on 15 May 1940 in Possilpark, Glasgow, was a Scottish singer and television entertainer whose warm contralto voice and irrepressible spirit made her one of Britain's most beloved light entertainment stars. Her father was the first to call her Lena, and she borrowed the surname Martell from a well-known brandy — joking, with characteristic wit, that someone had already spent a fortune publicising it. Her musical life began at the age of eleven, singing alongside her elder brother Allan's Dixie band at local dance venues across Glasgow. By her early teens she was performing at the Barrowland Ballroom with the Jimmie McGregor Band, and at fifteen she won the ITV talent show "Find the Singer," earning her first recording contract a year later. Those early years took her across the Atlantic — to New York and Las Vegas, where she shared stages with Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Barbra Streisand, whose role in Broadway's "Funny Girl" she understudied. Homesick for Scotland, she returned home in the mid-1960s, and BBC Scotland built her into one of the country's most recognisable faces. Her Saturday night series — "Presenting Lena Martell," "Make the Music Speak," and "Lena's Music" — drew audiences of eleven to thirteen million viewers, and she was voted British TV Personality of the Year four consecutive times. Her greatest commercial moment came in 1979, when her recording of "One Day at a Time" — a song that would prove eerily prophetic in her own life — reached number one on the UK Singles Chart for three weeks, sold approximately 2.5 million copies, and stayed in the charts for 36 weeks. In doing so, she became the first Scottish female solo artist to achieve a UK number-one single, a milestone that earned her a place in the Guinness Book of Records. She would go on to record some 30 albums and sell nearly 20 million records worldwide. Life brought real hardship alongside the success — the loss of her brother and her first love in the same decade, cancer affecting her voice, and financial difficulties that led to bankruptcy. Yet she met each setback with the same resolve she described simply as living one day at a time. She spent much of the 1990s quietly devoted to caring for her mother through Alzheimer's disease, an experience she called "a journey of discovery I wouldn't have missed for anything." In her later years Lena lived peacefully in Bishopbriggs with her long-term partner David, still carrying her Glasgow accent and her love of slipping into the Barras market unrecognised. She died on 5 October 2026, aged 86, at a nursing home near Glasgow. She leaves behind a legacy of sixty years of music, laughter, and an unmistakable voice — always delivered, as she insisted, with a smile.

What is your favourite memory shared with Lena?

I remember meeting Lena at the sage now glasshouse after her concert. I had my photo taken with her. I said I loved hearing her singing. I loved her songs like let me try again and one day at a time. I’m sorry to hear of her passing. I’ve prayed for her. I listened to one of her songs yesterday as I knew it was her funeral day. What a voice. Thanks for the memories Lena. Rip✝️ one day at a time Sweet Jesus x

Around eight years ago we went to the wee studio and did a duet, a version of One Day at a Time. I was very proud to do it and Helen still sounded really good. She was quite the opposite of playing up her success. She really will be sadly missed.

This is a sad time for the Pavilion and for many Scots who would recognise Lena as the last of Scotland's music hall greats. Older generations will recall her as a real superstar, a big voice and a big stage presence.

Lena really was a great personality and great to work with, both on and off the music. She was so full of humour and had ideas all the time for not just music, but plays and sitcoms. She'll be sadly missed, especially down at the Barras. She would always be down there with dark glasses, incognito. She really loved Glasgow.
