Recuerdos

If you don't live there, you're just camping out.

Joseph Michael Morgan — "Walpole Joe" to the fans who adored him, "Turnpike Joe" to those who knew his offseason hustle — was a son of Walpole, Massachusetts in every sense of the word. Born on November 19, 1930, to Irish immigrant parents William and Mary Kennedy Morgan, Joe grew up with a fierce work ethic and a natural gift for sport that would carry him from the rinks and diamonds of suburban Boston to the grandest stages in professional baseball. At Walpole High School and then Boston College, Morgan excelled as a two-sport star, earning All-American honors as a hockey center. A born competitor who once quipped, "If I was born in Canada, I would have played in the NHL for a long, long time," he ultimately chose baseball, signing with the Boston Braves in June 1952, the same summer he married his beloved wife, Dorothy Ann Glebus — "Dottie" — at Blessed Sacrament Church in Walpole. Morgan spent parts of four seasons in the major leagues between 1959 and 1964, suiting up for the Milwaukee Braves, Kansas City Athletics, Philadelphia Phillies, Cleveland Indians, and St. Louis Cardinals. When his playing days ended, he reinvented himself as a manager in the minor leagues, most memorably leading the Pawtucket Red Sox from 1974 to 1982 — the longest managerial tenure in franchise history — where he quietly shaped future Hall of Famers Jim Rice and Wade Boggs. To make ends meet during long New England winters, Morgan drove a snowplow on the Massachusetts Turnpike, worked as a carpenter, bricklayer, oil deliveryman, census taker, substitute teacher, truck dispatcher, and mail sorter. These blue-collar roots never left him, and Boston's working-class fans felt it. The moment that defined his legend came on July 14, 1988, when Joe was elevated from first base coach to interim manager after John McNamara was fired. What followed was nothing short of magical: the Red Sox won 12 consecutive games, 19 of their first 20, and 19 straight at Fenway Park — rocketing from fourth place to an improbable AL East championship. "Morgan Magic" became part of the language of New England summers. He managed the Red Sox through 1991, posting a 301–262 record and a second division title in 1990. Inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2006 and the International League Hall of Fame in 2008, Morgan remained a fixture at Walpole High School football games and in the neighborhood he called home for over seven decades — the same modest ranch house where he and Dottie built their family. He was, as those who knew him said, a "salty raconteur" with an inexhaustible well of baseball stories and an even deeper well of loyalty. Joe Morgan passed away on October 5, 2026, at the age of 95. He is survived by his four children — Catherine, Joseph Jr., William, and Barbara — six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He was one of us, and he was one of a kind.

'Morgan Magic' is forever part of Red Sox lore. Joe took over in 1988 and gave New England a summer it would never forget.

Joe Morgan manages the Red Sox during some of my most formative years as a fan. Joe made us believe, and when you experience that as a kid, it stays with you.

He was one of a kind. One of my best friends for 41 years. A great baseball mind with incredible intuition. He would have never needed analytics. A very loyal friend and a great storyteller.
