There will be a grave-side service in North Branch, Minnesota - Saturday, September 9, 2023 -  Trinity Cemetery, 5966 Cedar Street, 11:00 a.m.  A reception will follow afterwards in Lindstrom.

James Everett Peterson, 80 of Austin, TX passed peacefully at home with his family lovingly by his side on July 10, 2023. Jim was born on April 21, 1943 in Rush City, Minnesota, to Everett and Ruth (Erickson) Peterson.  Even though he was an only child, he considered his cousins as family, and he spoke often of long, enjoyable summers in North Branch.

After graduating from North Branch High school in 1961, Jim attended Dunwoody Industrial Institute in Minneapolis where he earned a degree in Mechanical Design.

Jim enlisted in the U.S. Naval Air Reserve and was on active duty from 1964 through 1966 at Quonset Point, Rhode Island and was deployed part-time to aircraft carriers USS Lake Champlain and USS Essex. A highlight of his naval career was observing the retrieval of Gemini 11 astronauts after they splashed down in the ocean.

Jim was passionate about drag racing. The sport consumed much of his spare time, and he considered those times and friendships through racing and the car club as the best of his younger years.

Jim worked various contract drafting assignments from 1967 to 1969 around Minneapolis/St. Paul area. In June of 1969, Jim was hired by the 3M Company of St. Paul, MN kickstarting a 34-year career there. He worked the Microfilm Production Division designing microfilm reader printers.

Jim met the love of his life and best friend, Bonita Ferbuyt at a downhill ski club meeting and it was pretty much love at first sight. They were married September 22, 1978. They both enjoyed downhill skiing for many years and Jim was active in recreational ski racing.

Their daughter, Lyndsey Ann Peterson (Williams) was born to them in 1980. In 1989 the family moved to Austin, Texas in a division transfer of the 3M Visual Systems Division. While there, Jim designed many overhead projectors and was awarded three U.S. patents. He retired in December of 2003.

Jim was a man of strong Christian faith and was a long-time member of Church of the Hills and then City Reach Church.

Along with his passion for drag racing and skiing, Jim enjoyed playing tennis and golf. As an oddity, he also liked to cut grass. He would often cut some of the neighbors’ grass just to see it look nice. Several times he coordinated neighbors to rescue single moms with much needed yard care. He could be seen pushing his lawn mower and trash can down and up the steep road.

Jim is survived by his wife, Bonita Peterson, daughter, Lyndsey Williams, son-in-law, Richard Williams and his grandsons, Bret and Colt Williams.

So very sorry to read of Jim’s passing. Jim and I both worked at 3M when he worked in St. Paul and we both spent time at the drag racing track. Jim was a lot of fun to be around. My condolences to the family.

Bonita, The many special times we have spent with you and Jim over the years has been a blessing to us. It has been a privilege to pray for you both at different times and we have appreciated your prayers for us over the years. Merritt especially will always remember the fun and fellowship that he had with Jim when they would go to the shooting range. Of course, classic cars were always a topic of discussion when they went to lunch afterwards! Jim was a very special man. He was kind, he cared about others, he was always willing to help. He was a treasured friend. You always felt better after having spent time with him. We will sorely miss him!

I am not very good at computers and Jim knew I wasn't so we would text some, but our favorite communication skill was to call and shoot the breeze. Jim and I shared so much stuff, shooting all kinds of guns, going to the drag races at Brainard, driving his Hot rod or he driving mine. We would talk car stuff for hours. Jim had an awesome background with racing, and he was good at it. He had some fast cars. Mustangs were his passion, but I would try to persuade him to thinking my Chevys were the way to go, but he would always politely say that's nice Larry and he would actually enjoy them about as much as his Stangs. Jim would play cards, go on hiking adventures and anything for the most part, always with you in his best of interest. If it would make you happy, he was all in. How Blessed I have been to share time with Jim. I put a couple of pictures in as well of Jim doing things we just shared. One more thing, our last Hot Rod ride together was in March in his Mustang. When we rounded 130 or so both his smile and mine couldn't have been bigger. Thank You Jim for all the great times and till we ride together again, we Love You. Larry

Bonita, My deepest condolences to you and your family. I sat next to and worked with Jim for many years at 3M. He was a meticulous designer, and I learned a lot from him, I will remember him as a man of honor and integrity.

I remember when we all came to Texas for your 50th birthday Bonita. Jim actually knocked on his bedroom door to COME OUT of the bedroom. We were a lot to handle for him all at once at your place. I also remember him checking under the blanket on the sofa to make sure we were all leaving and no one stayed behind! From being an only child to marrying into a family with nine children had to give him heart palpitations at first. Glad he got used to us and welcomed us with open arms.
