Recuerdos

I told them about my dreams of becoming an actor.

Vincent Dominic Pastore was born on July 14, 1946, in the Bronx, New York, and grew up in New Rochelle, Westchester County, the son of an Italian-American family whose roots would later become the soil for one of television's most beloved performances. He was a man who discovered himself late — and fully — and made every year count. After high school, Pastore enlisted in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War era, a chapter that shaped his discipline and resolve. He later returned to New York and earned a degree in drama from Pace University, though the stage would have to wait. For nearly thirty years, he made his living in the nightclub business and eventually as a chauffeur, including driving actors Matt and Kevin Dillon. It was the Dillons who saw something in him and urged him to pursue what he had always quietly carried inside: a dream of becoming an actor. That dream came alive in his forties. He began picking up small roles in the late 1980s and early 1990s — Goodfellas, Carlito's Way, Men of Respect — accumulating screen time and credibility alongside some of Hollywood's finest. His appearance in the HBO film Gotti (1996) introduced him to actors who would become his closest collaborators and friends. Then came 1999, and The Sopranos. David Chase cast Pastore as Salvatore "Big Pussy" Bonpensiero — Tony Soprano's best friend, mob enforcer, and secret FBI informant. Over thirty episodes across two seasons, Pastore gave Big Pussy a warmth, a conflict, and a tragedy that few supporting characters in television history have matched. His execution at sea in the Season 2 finale remains one of the most emotionally devastating scenes ever filmed for television. He earned a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Ensemble in a Drama Series in 2000. What followed was a career of extraordinary range: Broadway debuts in Chicago and Bullets Over Broadway, more than 180 film and television credits, a theater co-founded with Maureen Van Zandt, a podcast, and even his own Italian sauce company. Vincent Pastore never stopped working, never stopped loving the craft, and never took a single day of it for granted. He was found at his Bronx home on August 1, 2026, at the age of 80. He is survived by his daughter, Renee. His distinctive New York voice, his enormous heart, and his Big Pussy are permanent fixtures of American culture.

Our beloved friend and collaborator VINCENT PASTORE has passed away. This is a hard one for us, it seems like I've known Vinny forever. We did lots of work together and travelled all over the USA as well as Italy and Australia. Lots of good times. Lots of laughs. Vinny was a kind-hearted brother who cared deeply about his family and friends. I will miss him always.

To the world, he will always be remembered as the unforgettable 'Big Pussy,' but to those of us who knew him, he was so much more.
