Tony Christopher, Baron Christopher

Anthony Martin Grosvenor Christopher — known as Tony — was one of Britain's most enduring public servants: a trade unionist, tax official, Labour life peer, and decorated public figure whose extraordinary life spanned more than a century of British history. Born on 25 April 1925 in Leckhampton, Gloucestershire, to George and Helen Christopher, he grew up alongside his sister Patricia in a world on the brink of transformation. When the family moved to Cheltenham in 1931, young Tony attended Naunton Park Primary School and then Cheltenham Grammar School, before going on to Westminster College of Commerce. The Second World War shaped him profoundly. He served in the Royal Air Force from 1944 to 1948, enlisting in the conflict's final stages — a chapter that would define his identity for the rest of his life. As a boy, he had watched a neighbour's house destroyed by a Luftwaffe bombing raid; as a young man, he answered the call to serve. In 1948, he joined the Inland Revenue and began a lifelong commitment to the rights of working people. He departed in 1957 to devote himself full-time to the Inland Revenue Staff Federation, eventually rising to General Secretary — a post he held from 1976 to 1988. During those years he also served on the General Council of the Trades Union Congress, including a term as TUC Chairman in 1988–89, and chaired NACRO, the national crime rehabilitation charity, for a quarter century. His influence extended to financial institutions: he chaired both TU Fund Managers Ltd and the Civil Service Building Society. A prolific voice on inequality, he published Policy for Poverty (1970), The Wealth Report (1979), and The Wealth Report 2 (1982). In 1984 he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire, and in 1998 was created a life peer as Baron Christopher of Leckhampton, taking the Labour whip in the House of Lords. Following the death of Lord Carrington in 2018, he became the oldest sitting member of the Lords — and ultimately the last serving British parliamentarian to have lived through the Second World War. Married to Adela Joy Thompson from 1953 until her death in October 2024 at the remarkable age of 105, Tony Christopher died on 13 July 2026, aged 101. He leaves behind a legacy of steadfast advocacy, intellectual rigour, and unshakeable public service.
