If you survive the load, the second half is on me.
Tom Dreesen was an American stand-up comedian, actor, and storyteller whose journey from crushing poverty to the stages of Las Vegas stands as one of the most remarkable arcs in the history of American comedy. Born on September 11, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois, and raised in Harvey, he grew up in a railroad car-shaped shack behind a factory — no running water, no heat, rats burrowing through the walls. As a boy he shined shoes and caddied at golf courses to help his family survive. Those early years never left him; they became the bedrock of his humor and his humanity.
After graduating from Thornton Township High School, Dreesen enlisted in the United States Navy, serving from 1956 to 1960. The Navy took him around the world and gave him a discipline that would carry him through the leaner years ahead. Back in Chicago, he worked construction, bartended, and sold insurance while raising his family. Then, in 1969, he and Black marketing executive Tim Reid formed "Tim and Tom" — widely celebrated as the first interracial stand-up comedy duo in the United States. In an era of fierce racial division, they walked into clubs and used laughter to bridge a nation's wounds.
When the act dissolved in the mid-1970s, Dreesen drove to Los Angeles with little more than ambition. He slept in an abandoned car, washed in gas station bathrooms, and survived on a dollar a day — until The Comedy Store gave him a stage. He championed the fight to get comedians paid there, an act of solidarity that endeared him to a generation of performers.
The career that followed was extraordinary. More than 500 television appearances, 61 Tonight Show spots with Johnny Carson, and thirteen-plus years as Frank Sinatra's opening act — a professional relationship that deepened into a profound personal friendship. "Frank went from being a boss, to being a buddy, to being like a father to me," Dreesen once said. He was Master of Ceremonies at Sinatra's 1998 wake and a pallbearer at his funeral, telling a joke at the service because he knew, with certainty, that was what Frank would have wanted.
He authored two books, served fourteen years as an ambassador for the Gary Sinise Foundation on behalf of veterans and first responders, and mentored comedians including Byron Allen. A devoted Catholic and tireless philanthropist, Dreesen never forgot where he came from.
Tom Dreesen died on June 17, 2026, at his home in Los Angeles, at age 86, surrounded by the love of a life lived fully and generously. He is survived by his children and seven grandchildren.
