Thomas Dill

12 de septiembre de 1942 - 21 de abril de 2022

12 de septiembre de 1942 - 21 de abril de 2022

Thomas Dill, 79, retired physician, passed away April 21, 2022 at home in North Asheville, NC. Tom spent his life and career in service to the communities of Asheville and Sylva, NC as a pediatrician and school board member. He was born in Grovetown, Georgia in 1942. A middle child in his family, along with his two sisters, he was raised by his mother Virginia Dill, a school teacher and his father Joseph Dill, the superintendent of the local lumber yard. He had an illustrative high school football career, his team nearly winning the state championship at Richmond Academy in Augusta, GA. He secured the superlatives of "Best Personality" and "Most Handsome" before he went on to college and medical school at Augusta College, University of Georgia at Athens and ultimately at Medical College of Georgia respectively. He served as a medic in the Navy during Vietnam. He completed his medical training via internship in Charlotte, NC and residency at Grady Hospital in Atlanta before embarking on a career in rural pediatrics in Western North Carolina. Tom was known to be soft spoken and gentle in his nature. He found solace in the simple acts of walking (especially the golf course), reading, and gardening. He was a lifelong Atlanta Braves fan and proud member of the Jackson County Golf Club. He was always up for an adventure and had a silly sense of humor. He had the great skill of making you feel heard--achieved by listening more than speaking, a philosophy he espoused his entire life. He was not a man of small talk and much better at discussing life's big questions. When asked to define his most important values in life, he would tell you justice and integrity. By those who knew him, he would carry the title of gentleman. He was a beloved father and husband, devoted to his numerous animal companions, and enjoyed his community at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Asheville. He kept friends from all chapters of his life from youth to his final days. He is survived by a large and loving family, too numerous to list, a testament to his legacy. The family will hold a private celebration of life at his request in lieu of a formal service. Below are causes he contributed to. He would want you to practice kindness in your thoughts and actions. I am so sorry for your family's loss. Tom will always be "Dr. Dill" to me. I first met him when he cared for my children, grew to know him as a colleague as I worked side-by-side with him in the hospital nursery, & then became more familiar with him when he was my "boss" in the Sylva Peds office. He encompassed all the virtues & values that make a man truly memorable. He had that twinkle in his eye, that great sense of humor, & that grin that made him well-liked by all. I will always have the greatest respect for him as a doctor, a family man, & a human being.

My heart breaks for all who knew Dr. Dill, my thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family. Dr. Dill was the first pediatrician I was ever taken to, and no matter the sick day, I looked forward to a visit with him. He changed the lives of so many children and parents, from a stuffed rabbit in your earache, to a gentle hand through difficult medical decisions. Dr. Dill left a life long impact on everyone he met, and he will be greatly missed.

Our thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Dr. Dill. Dr. Dill was the best of the best, he was so very kind and his way with children was a trait that God touched him with. His impact on our community is beyond measure and he touched so many lives. The World would be a much better place if we would follow his example! My family and myself were so blessed to have known him and be touched by him. God Bless you all!

He was a true gentleman and a wonderful doctor, he took care of both my boys, my husband got killed not long after my second son was born and I remember and still have it I took both boys to their appointment one day and he walked in and handed me a toy bat and said if these two get as big as clay was then u better invest in ball bats, because u so small and short you are going to need them lmao. Now both are grown and one is almost 7 foot tall... Dr. Dills you will be missed by many, my heart breaks for the family's loss

I worked with Dr. Dill at Harris Hospital. He always treated the staff as medical partners. When I had my daughter, I discovered his compassion for new moms and his love of children. He will be missed.
