Terrill Jan Smith
March 11th, 1940 - March 26th, 2019
March 11th, 1940 - March 26th, 2019
Terrill J. Smith a long time resident of Long Beach, CA passed away on March 26, 2019. She was surrounded by her two sons, and her lifelong friend Dian Allison. Terrill was born on March 11th, 1940 in Seattle, Washington. Terrill was an uplifting and charismatic soul that nourished those around her with her wit and good humor. She was always quick with a smile and a kind word. Terrill was also a fierce warrior that defended those she cared for like a momma bear would her cubs. Some have said she led many lives - teacher, writer, windsurfer, golfer, friend, parent, and companion. Terrill's first passion was teaching Creative Writing for 36 years at Pioneer High School in Whittier, CA. While her peers clamored to teach the honors and college prep classes, she let it be known that she preferred the "regular" students. Terrill felt that anyone could teach kids that were highly motivated. Of course that is not exactly true but it was reason enough for her. Terrill retired in 2004, but she never slowed down. She published three books, including Motivating the Bad Attitude Kids, and Feathers on My Path. She also loved golf - and cherished the time she spent with all of her friends and teammates from Old Ranch Country Club, Mile Square Park, and others. Terrill was the beloved wife of Harvey Don Smith; the always-supportive mother and teacher to her two sons, Mark and Matt Mason; "Gran-Tee" to her grand kids David, Catherine and Elizabeth Mason. She also loved and supported Don's kids, Tim and Keri, and was the cherished grandmother to their wonderful children Tricia, Garrett; and Hudson, Cassidy and Delaney. Terrill will forever be remembered by her brothers Roger and Gerald Dunham, and her sister Vicki. A memorial service will be held at a future date at Mile Square Park.
