Recuerdos

Stephen H. Grant, 84, of Arlington, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home on April 12, 2025.

A retired Foreign Service Officer, Steve led a life marked by global service, scholarship, and a deep appreciation for the arts.

Born in Boston, Steve graduated from Noble & Greenough School in Dedham, MA, and later from Amherst College, in Amherst, MA. He earned a master’s degree from Middlebury College, VT,  following a formative year at the Sorbonne in Paris. He completed his doctorate at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, specializing in international education.

Steve’s career began with the Peace Corps, teaching in Sassandra, Ivory Coast. He went on to consult for the Academy for Educational Development, with assignments in Washington, D.C., and Abidjan, Ivory Coast. His distinguished tenure with USAID included posts as education and training officer in Ivory Coast, Egypt, Guinea, Indonesia, and El Salvador, as well as in Washington, D.C. headquarters. He also worked as an educational consultant for UNESCO in Paris and Abidjan. In Massachusetts, he was certified to teach and spent five years in the classroom.

An avid historian and author, Steve published three books of social history using vintage picture postcards, highlighting life in Indonesia, Guinea, and El Salvador. His work was featured in USAID FrontLines.

In retirement, Steve volunteered as a senior fellow at the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training (ADST) in Arlington from 2004 to 2018, where he edited oral histories and diplomatic memoirs and lectured on African culture at the Foreign Service Institute. His biography Peter Strickland (New Academia, 2007) was recognized as an “ADST-DACOR Diplomats and Diplomacy Book,” with a launch at DACOR and forewords by Ken Brown and Michael Ely. His second biography, Collecting Shakespeare: The Story of Henry and Emily Folger (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2014), brought to light the lives of the founders of the Folger Shakespeare Library and was the subject of a Newberry Cultural Series Lecture at DACOR.

Steve was deeply involved in his community, particularly through Arlington Neighborhood Village, where he spoke to Aging-in-Place groups about how he modified his beloved 1926 Arlington home—of which he was only the second owner.

Music was a lifelong joy. From church choirs to Gilbert & Sullivan operettas and double-quartet harmony in high school, Steve’s voice carried across continents. At Amherst, he sang in the Chapel Choir and toured Europe with the Smith-Amherst Chamber Singers, performing in Chartres Cathedral, a candle-lit Renaissance theater in Vicenza, and enjoyed post-concert spaghetti with Gian Carlo Menotti in Spoleto. He later performed Carmina Burana in an 1821 Dutch opera house in Jakarta and sang with Encore Chorale in Washington, D.C., as well as on tours through Canada, Cuba, the Danube, and the Mediterranean.

Steve is survived by his children, Yonel and Sylviane; his granddaughter, Gabriela; his partner, Abigail Wiebenson; and his former spouse, Annick.

When we met up with Steeve on Gorée at the end of 2003, we were face to face with this “Charles de Gaulle en Boubou”, as some old Senegalese sages used to call him. Steeve had come to live for a while on this island in the Bay of Dakar, to write a book about this 19th century American consul in Senegal. Steeve was inquisitive, thoughtful and always had a kind word for our children, Alice, Jacques and Julien, aged 6, 4 and 2 in 2003. Steeve was a literary man, passionate about books and oral tradition. Like the griots he met on his travels, like the Senegalese sages with whom he could sit for long hours under a majestic baobab tree, Steeve was a storyteller. This 4-year period in Senegal gave us the opportunity to spend time with Steeve, to welcome him into our home. And he left his mark on our wonderful time in this country. I knew Steeve from my teenage years with Yonel, in Côte d'Ivoire, but after those rich Dakar moments, we saw each other quite regularly. With Abigaël by his side, in Paris or Giverny. And with Jacques, Steeve welcomed us to his home in February 2019, and we saw him again with Delphine a year ago. And Alice also had hav some lovely time in the "Museum House" in DC. Always beautiful, rich memories. There was some modesty in the emotions, but we were always happy to meet up again, because we had in common this African land full of passions and emotions. I'll treasure all those rich moments and think of him. Olivier

Dear Sylvianne: I was so sorry to learn of Steve's passing. Your father was a cherished cousin of mine. Steve's upbeat and enthusiastic presence made him a joy to be around. My wife Marcia and I visited Steve at his Arlington home a few years ago. One night, he cooked dinner for us. It was delicious. Steve truly was a man of many talents. During our stay we shared dinner one evening with Steve and Abigail at her lovely home. He also took us for a tour of the Folger Museum. It was a wonderful visit, all carefully planned by Steve, our gracious and attentive host. I send my heartfelt condolences to you, Yonel, Abigail and your families. I hope that cherished memories comfort you at this difficult time. With love, Bronson Hawley

Delphine Dubois

¿Cómo conociste a Stephen?

My Darling Sylviane, I am deeply saddened by the loss of your father, Steven Grant. Over the past few decades, I had the privilege of knowing him and spending wonderful times together with your father in New York, Washington D.C., and France. He was a remarkable man—intelligent, kind, generous, funny, calm, articulate, a lifelong learner and the list extends. His stories were always captivating, and his thirst for knowledge was truly inspiring. I recall one day in France seeing him spend time in the library glancing through a vast array of books and finally selecting a book to sit and read. One of my most cherished memories is attending his book launch in New York with his wonderful partner, Abigail. It was a night filled with joy and pride, celebrating his incredible achievements. More recently, I remember Autumn of 2024, when I visited with Steve and Abigail this stands out as a beautiful time of connection and warmth. Sylviane, your father's legacy of wisdom, humor, and kindness and more will forever remain in our hearts. Please know that I am here for you and your family during this difficult time.
