It's been an incredible three years now that we've missed Ron. But he is not forgotten, so I would still like to express my great respect and admiration for him here. I also think of him with gratitude, because it was a very good and instructive experience to be allowed to work with him and, moreover, he supported me a lot in my career. Every now and then I look at the memorial website, enjoy the nice photos - especially with his unmistakable smile - and check whether the memorial event announced at that time will still take place.

I had known Ron for many years because of my familiarity with his research, but it was only after we began working together that we became friends. Ron was anxious to continue the work which he had started in Sweden. In this work he used very deep integrations to detect faint OH from the Milky Way, and that led him to speculate that thermal OH emission might be used to trace the molecular component in the Galactic regions where CO emission was weak or absent. At a conference in New Mexico in 2011 we discussed the feasibility of using the GBT to continue this study and to extend the observations to nearby spiral galaxies. Thus began a quest that spanned nearly a decade and which continues today through the efforts of Ron's student Michael Busch. What impressed me about Ron's approach was his insistence on scientific rigor, whether it concerned the instrumentally induced systematics or the interpretation of the observations themselves. But I also came to appreciate the man himself. We had many meals together at the cafeteria, and occasionally ventured over to restaurants in the next valley. We waked the site roads many times, and argued amicably in the coffee room. Ron was kind and generous, and was always ready with an amusing story or with some insight about a news item which he had just read in the Times. I will forever cherish these moments.

My condolences to Ron's family and friends. Ron provided me with incredible support when I was at STScI. He was insightful and generous. But he wasn't all serious business -- he was wonderful, delightful company at conferences.

It was very sad to hear about Ron's sudden decease. I was one of Ron's first PhD students and I have extremely good memories about the time when he taught me the subtleties of radio astronomy and foremost the importance of understanding what you are doing and how the system you are using works. I did the first RFI measurements with him on the Paddepoel (now Zernike) campus preparing the way for the small interferometer Ron put together for students to get hands-on experience with a radio interferometer. I am very grateful for the way he launched me into my astronomy career and kept the interest he raised in me in both the scientific and the technical aspects of astronomy (including software). His 'let's start with the basics' approach has proven the be very useful. Thank you Ron !!

Ron was a great friend and mentor. The photo was taken in 2013 when he and I traveled together to attend a conference in Beijing.

Ron was a fantastic teacher, not only because he had a deep and personal understanding of the material, but also because he shared in the joy of learning and understanding of his students. Taking his Fourier Optics class was one of the most positive experiences I had in grad school; Ron's teaching style was interactive and thoughtful. He continued being an encouraging mentor and role model long after the class was over. His lessons remain relevant to my work and interactions with others and I am so grateful for them.
