Rev. Charles "Chuck" Gommer, Jr.
3 de abril de 1935 - 2 de diciembre de 2024
3 de abril de 1935 - 2 de diciembre de 2024
Reverend Charles (Chuck) F. Gommer Jr., 89, of Dallas, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on Monday at the Meadows Nursing Home in Dallas, PA. Born in Nanticoke, PA, he was the beloved son of the late Reverend Charles F. Gommer Sr. and Thelma Arline Walk Gommer.
Charles devoted much of his life to serving others and the church. He spent most of his years in northeastern Pennsylvania but lived for a short time in Endwell, NY. A dedicated scholar, he attended Ashley High School, Houghton College, New York Theological Seminary, Temple University, and San Francisco Theological Seminary.
In 1958, Charles was ordained a deacon, and in 1961, became an elder in the former Wyoming Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. He served faithfully in numerous Pennsylvania UMC congregations including Huntsville, Avoca, Trucksville, First United Methodist Church of Kingston, the Church of Christ Uniting in Kingston, and in Endwell, NY. He served as District Superintendent of the Wilkes-Barre District (1984–1990) and later as the Wyoming Conference Council Director (1990–1995). He retired from full-time clergy status in 1998 but continued his ministry of mentoring and mission until his death.
Charles’s leadership was pivotal in uniting the First United Methodist Church of Kingston and the Kingston Presbyterian Church into the Church of Christ Uniting (COCU) after the 1972 Agnes flood. He had a deep passion for missions and led outreach teams to Haiti, Cuba, Zimbabwe, and other regions, both near and far. Locally, he contributed to rebuilding efforts after Hurricane Agnes and served his community as part of the Kingston Home Rule Charter Study in 1974 and on the Kingston Council. He continued to support political campaigns for worthy candidates who exhibited the moral character he expected and exhibited.
Throughout his life, Charles’s unwavering faith inspired his advocacy for the vulnerable and underserved. He worked tirelessly to secure funding for initiatives such as Africa University, universal medical care, and equal access to education. His sermons and personal interactions encouraged everyone to live lives of service and compassion, reflecting the "better angels of our nature."
Charles was not only a man of service but also one who cherished life’s joys. He excelled in sports during his school years, playing basketball and football, and later found great pleasure in golfing. He was an avid reader, a trombone player, and a dedicated fan of Penn State football and the Miami Dolphins. Above all, he treasured his time with family and friends, sharing laughter and cherished moments with his wife, Viola, and a close-knit group of lifelong friends. He was known to enjoy a good Tangeray and tonic or a Manhattan (with two cherries) when appropriate.
Charles was deeply devoted to his wife, his Queen of 66 years, Viola Audrey Ruelke, whom he called "the love of his life.” Charles once wrote to Viola saying,, “There just aren’t words enough to tell you how much you mean to me.”
Together, they built a legacy of love and faith that will endure for generations.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Sharlene Connor. He is survived by his wife, Viola; his son, Rev. Craig C. Gommer, and wife, Cathy; his daughter, Graceann Forrester, and husband, Gregory; niece Marie Harding; nephew Walter Connor and wife, Daria; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

I had the blessing of knowing Rev Gommer from 1973 through the 1980's. Chuck was a man who commanded your attention from the pulpit. Even as a young kid, I remember listening to him at CoCU, the way he would grab the sides of the pulpit, and lean into the mic when he needed to go to that slower, softer tone for emphasis. Anyone reading this who has had the pleasure of hearing a Chuck Gommer sermon will immediately know of what I am referring. He drew you in, captured your mind and your soul. He knew how to deliver a message, never preaching down to you, but through you. It was and continues to be a lasting memory for me. What a giant, what a humble servant he was.

Pastor Chuck had a genuine and positive impact upon my life during his tenure at Trucksville Methodist. That impact was felt many other Back Mountain teens. Rest in peace, Pastor Chuck, rest in honor.

It was with great sadness that I read of the passing of The Rev. I first met Chuck back in 2011 when I started playing golf with the Easy Riders. From the moment I met him, I could tell he was someone special. He had such a tremendous outlook and joy in life and being with his friends. He was a pleasure to golf with because the time with friends and the camaraderie and laughter were so much more important to him than the golf ever was. It was so easy to forget a bad day on the links after a great day with Chuck. He was always interested in hearing about us as people and learning about our families and always wishing blessings and all the best for all of us. He was a regular at the after-golf get togethers, where he could always be heard ordering his Manhattans, and offering to buy a round for the group. When my wife and I moved back out West a number years ago, I knew I would miss the Easy Riders, and especially Chuck because of how good he made me and others feel just being around him. Chuck, we'll all miss you and will always remember that you left us and the world a better place. RIP my friend and Godspeed.

Although I didn't know Pastor Charles well, he did fill a void in our church pulpit during a time we were looking for a church home in Mountain Top, PA. We are now members of Christ United Methodist Church for nearly 15 years. We appreciate his joyful and reverent service to CUMC. And now, we have the privilege of worshiping with his son Craig in Mountain Top. Welcome home, dear Pastor. Ric and Carol Aguayo

With heartfelt sympathy to Grace, Craig, and Viola Gommer. Rev. Gommer was an important part of my growing up days in Kingston and at the Church of Christ Uniting. His friendship with my parents, Jean and Frank Hughes was close and full of mutual respect. In sympathy to you all, Betsy Hughes Phillips

¿Cuál es tu recuerdo favorito compartido con Rev. Charles?
My favorite memory of Rev Chuck is him baptizing our daughter back in 2010. She is now active in the church since she was confirmed.
