Recuerdos

Nick Jacob Janzen Jr. died August 13, 2022 at Kelowna Hospital from complications following surgery. Nick was born in Coaldale, Alberta on November 30, 1943. He was raised on the family farm just outside of town and graduated from Kate Andrews High School in 1961. He married Rose Fiedler September 5, 1964 in Lethbridge. Nick was not particularly keen on school, nevertheless he studied automechanics at Lethbridge College and completed his 3-year apprenticeship in 1967. He worked for several years as a mechanic and then joined the Lethbridge Fire Department in May 1970. After retiring from the Fire Department in 1999, he and Rose settled in Crawford Bay, BC where he enjoyed fishing, sailing, drinking coffee and tinkering on various projects for himself and his neighbors. He was always curious to solve a problem and create a solution. He was known by many as someone who could fix anything. Always a great story teller, he will also be remembered for his humor and guitar playing, and singing country songs around the campfire. John Denver and Gordon Lightfoot were particular favorites. Through his life, Nick struggled with alcohol dependency and proudly conquered his addiction. He was a mentor and sponsor to many in AA. This experience sparked an interest in spirituality that he would study for the rest of his life. He is survived by his wife, Rose; their children, Russell and Heather; his grandson, Cyrus and his sisters, Elfriede and Elvira. Predeceased by his parents Nick Sr. and Mary Janzen, and his brother Walter. In accordance with Nick's wishes, his ashes were scattered in a private ceremony on Kootenay Lake near his favorite fishing spot. He will be missed.

I loved it when Uncle Nick and Auntie Rose, Russell and Heather came out to BC in the summer. He had the most infectious laugh. I loved hearing about his firefighter stories. I too thought it was very cool having an Uncle as a firefighter. Rest easy Uncle Nick ❤

Uncle Nick, I will always remember camping in beaver mines. Oh the fishing stories you could tell. They were such good times. I will miss your sense of humor, guitar playing and yes even your singing. Now your with my dad and Gus, and the rest. Hope the fish are biting.you will always be in our memories. I always thought that Uncle Nick was the coolest. He had a great car that I loved and he was a firefighter! Who wouldn’t think that was cool? I wish we would have kept in closer contact over the years. Tight lines Nick.

We were saddened to hear of Nick's passing and look back on the occasions we had together with fondness. Nick was at ease in conversation and always brought out the light-hearted side at family events, making all present feel comfortable no matter the reason for the gathering. Enjoy the next phase of your journey, Nick. Betty and Ken Odland
