Nesrin, One year ago we lost your physical presence. However every day you feel my heart and thoughts with all kinds of memories. Happiness, sadness, wonder and despair. You are remembered and loved now and forever. I hope you're peacefully at rest. I love you. Your brother, Erdal.

The Aksoy Family moved into a house across the street from my mom's house when I was a teenager. Nes and I struck up a conversation and became friends fast. We became roommates a few years later. She had the best sense of humor. She was so witty. I had never met anyone so quick with humor, before I met Nes. She was one of the funniest people I ever met. Her big blue eyes and sense of humor lit up a room when she entered. Our paths lead us in different directions. She lived in Orange County, and I moved to Los Angeles. However, we always remained good friends and saw each other often. Every time we'd get together, it was like we'd just seen each other the day before. I feel so fortunate to have had such a beautiful person inside and out as one of my longest, dearest and best friends. I believe that Nes and I shared a bond that many people never get to experience in life. She left this earth too soon, and it's extremely painful not to have her presence in my life. However, I thank God for bringing her into my life and giving us the love and friendship we shared while she was on earth. Nes I miss you. You were such a good friend. I wish I could have spent more time with you.

June 4th was my best friend's birthday. She passed away in October of a heart attack from a rare coronary heart disease she had but didn't know about. It was a Thursday, and I was swamped with work. In addition, I was recovering from seeing riots on my street and in my city the previous Sunday. I learned so much from my Turkish friend. Nesrin moved to the United States as a little child. She was bullied and ridiculed by her classmates for being different growing up in the U.S. I learned from my roommate and friend to respect people of different nationalities and cultures. She taught me to accept their differences and embrace diversity. As a result, I have had many cultural experiences and learned so much about the world from friends and neighbors who grew up in other countries. I am so thankful for having Nesrin in my life and teaching me so much about acceptance, understanding and inclusion of all races. She taught me, a close minded girl from Huntington Beach, to be open and accepting of all people in the world. She changed my outlook on life. I have close friends now from all over the world because of her. I will always love and remember her for that. Thank you Nesrin Aksoy. I miss you.
