Recuerdos

"For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully, just as I also have been fully known. But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love." 2 Cor 13:12–13

Michael Lee Burns II, born August 6th, 1972, in El Paso Texas, passed away peacefully from a heart attack during the night of August 29th, 2025 (August 28th, 2025 in the Western Hemisphere), while in Shanghai, China, with his beloved wife Jill by his side. Though Mike was in perfectly good health, the Lord had other plans for him and decided to usher him into his heavenly home early at the age of 53.

The son of Michael Burns I (deceased) and Pat Zane, Mike fathered three wonderful children with his wife Jill—Tanner, Noah, and Zoe Burns—and is also survived by his younger brother, Tucker Burns. His family is proud to bear his last name and will forever remember Mike as the best dad, husband, brother, and friend anyone could ever ask for. Mike loved each of his family and countless others with the undying love of his Lord, Jesus Christ, and his family speaks of how his life was worth hundreds of years rather than merely 53. The sheer impact, love, and care Mike displayed toward others over his short time on earth can be quantified by none other than God alone.

Mike was a man of immense joy and passion. When he had time to himself, you could find him fly fishing in mountain rivers, golfing across the world, and listening to audio books. Nevertheless, his true passion was for others. As Co-Founder and Master Coach at Adaptive Leaders, Mike spent thousands of hours investing in the lives of global business leaders and executives, helping them to not only grow their professional performance but also to become better parents, friends, spouses, and individuals.

Furthermore, many around the world consider Mike their spiritual father and mentor. Mike prayed diligently for those in his life, especially his family, and wanted every person he came into contact with to know of his Savior's love. Whether in a zoom meeting, church pew, or airplane aisle, Mike's faith compelled him to sacrificially lay down his life for neighbor and stranger alike. Though Mike is now at home with Christ above, the fruit of his life is present here below like a glimpse into heaven's window and will endure unto eternity.

I had the privilege of meeting Mike during the pandemic years in Shanghai. What began as a conversation grew into a friendship that changed my life in ways I am still discovering. Through Mike, I found a deeper connection to God and a clearer understanding of the responsibilities that were truly mine to carry in life. He had a rare gift — the ability to listen fully, without judgment, and to guide gently but firmly toward truth. In his coaching and in his friendship, he helped me uncover tools to face some of my deepest emotions and begin a process of healing that has profoundly shaped who I am today. Mike was always present. Not just physically present, but emotionally and spiritually attentive. He had a way of making you feel seen and understood, even in moments when you struggled to understand yourself. His wisdom was grounded, his faith was alive, and his care for others was unmistakable. Just shortly before the heartbreaking news of his passing, we spoke on the phone. He shared with me a link so I could witness and celebrate his son’s wedding — a moment of joy he wanted others to share in. We also spoke of meeting again in Texas. Like so many who loved him, I now carry the quiet ache of words left unspoken and plans left unfinished. To Jill, Tanner, Noah, Zoe, and the entire Burns family: thank you for sharing Mike with the world. His life bore fruit far beyond what can be measured, and I am one of many whose path was altered because of his generosity, faith, and love. I continue to pray for your family. And I carry with me the hope that I might grow into someone who offers others even a fraction of the understanding, courage, and grace that Mike offered me — especially in seasons when it was most needed. Mike’s life did not end; it multiplied. His influence lives on in those he guided, encouraged, challenged, and loved. I will remember him with deep gratitude and warmth, always.

Jill and family, I’ve been thinking and praying for you constantly. There are no words; but I know where Mike is! I so enjoyed listening to him at your father’s funeral. His testimony was amazing and I felt uplifted after the ceremony. How many times does that happen after a funeral? I had planned on attending his memorial, but it was my mother’s 80th birthday that weekend. I know it was a special service and I intend to watch now it’s up. Thinking and praying for you on this difficult journey, Jill. Love Merrill

I was introduced to Mike at the beginning of this year by a colleague who had met him on a flight a few months prior. He was doing work with our firm in Shanghai, and it was just a coincidence that they sat next to each other on the plane. During that flight, they struck up a conversation, and Mike, in what I have learned is true “Mike fashion,” ended up coaching her. She was genuinely astonished by how deeply he listened and the valuable insights he offered after just a few hours of getting to know her. She introduced Mike to me because she thought we could leverage his leadership program for our fellow partners in Central Texas. Mike and I met for lunch a few times over the subsequent months, and once in my office when he came by to share a copy of his book. Each meeting was marked by engaging conversations, and each time he used the opportunity to coach me. Like everyone else, I was stunned to learn of his passing. We had had lunch just a week before, and he seemed as healthy and energetic as ever. He spoke about the upcoming retreat Jill was organizing and thoughtfully connected me with her to see if there was an opportunity for me to join. I’m sincerely grateful that he made that introduction. I am also grateful that I was able to attend the celebration of his life and witness the extraordinary family that Mike and Jill built. Tanner, Noah, and Zoe are clear reflections of two remarkable people. I was so impressed by their poise and by the clarity and eloquence of their words. All of us were touched in some way by Mike, and I am committed to honor his legacy by engaging with Adaptive Leaders in collaboration with my firm and, on a personal level, by practicing the wisdom he shared through his coaching. He was an incredible human being with an amazing gift, and I am honored to have met him and Jill.

Hi Jill, it’s been two months and I have not stopped thinking about Mike and you. Right now it’s about 9pm on November 8 Shanghai time. I just came back from Times Grocery. A guy was checking out in front of me with a striking resemblance of Mike, stature, gray hair, warm smile, deep voice… for a moment I thought my dear friend is back in the neighborhood. Oh I miss you buddy. Wish we can talk about how God is working in both of our lives while downing another pint of beer! Stay strong Jill - glimpses of eternity do show up.

¿Cómo conociste a Mike?

I met Mike in the early 2000s through his wife Jill at our old church NewSong NOC. He and Jill were such a spiritual power couple, through their service, leadership and warmth. My interactions with Mike were few, and I honestly can’t tell you his exact words (sure something wise and insightful about my relationship dramas) but I can absolutely tell you how he made this (at the time 20+yo) feel. He made me feel heard, grounded, encouraged, that in spite of my own stubbornness and that God still had plans for me. It is true what they say about people remembering how you made them feel > than what you actually said. Thank you Mike and thank you Lord for him.

¿Cómo conociste a Mike?

I’ve known Mike for a long time. Today is a full circle moment. I met Mike when he was a young Aggie learning to walk with Jesus at Texas A&M. He stood out to me, first, because he was taller than anyone I’d ever met! But more than that, he possessed teachability and hunger for Christ that stood out among the several hundred freshmen our Cru ministry team was getting to know on campus. God gifted Mike with the power of WOO - Winning Others Over. He grew into a leader on campus - in the Aggie Corps, and ultimately becoming the Student Director of Cru’s campus ministry. Yes, I had the privilege of discipling Mike for a season. But he discipled me as well. One time I took the men I was discipling away for a weekend of camping, shooting, cooking, and fishing. At that point in my ministry my parents were still not fully on board with God’s calling in my life. I vividly recall, after complaining about their lack of enthusiasm, that Mike took me aside, and in his gentle giant way rebuked me, saying, “Ken, you are not honoring your parents, and God will not honor your relationship with them.” He called me out, and I repented, and changed the way I viewed them and spoke of them for the rest of their days. Thank you, Mike, for your candor and willingness to speak truth with grace. As Mike grew in discipleship he was developing his convictions that would lead to his one life ambition - to take the gospel to the world and share Christ to the nations. One summer, Mike joined our team and my family on a student mission experience overseas in China. There was another staff woman on that team, her name was Jill. Mike fell hard and fast, and one year later I was blessed to officiate their wedding as they became husband and wife. That was 30 years ago this summer. Fast forward to 5 years ago, when I was wrestling with my calling to the ministry I loved for 35 years, Mike spoke words of challenge, promise, and blessing over me. “Ken, God has something new for you!” He encouraged me to live courageously, to envision a new chapter of ministry where God might use me to broaden my influence beyond a single organization to dozens more. His was not the only prompt, but a significant voice in my discernment process. When I heard clearly from the Lord it was time to take a leap into the unknown, Mike was there to pray with me and coach me across the Jordan river into a new organization, and a new role that fit me like a glove, and into a new season of influence in these past five years. Mike and I partnered together to serve the global executive leadership teams - both of my former organization, Cru, as well as my new organization, East-West. Mike was highly respected by team members in both organizations. When I learned of Mike’s sudden and tragic death, I felt a deep sense of shock and loss. I thought immediately of Jill, of Tanner, Noah and Zoe, his growing company at Adaptive Leaders, and his extensive global network of friends. When we receive news like this, it is natural to wrestle with life’s deeper questions, and to direct them to the God of heaven and earth. But in Jesus’ kingdom economy, a man’s life is not measured by the quantity of his days, but by the quality of his relationships. By that measure, Mike’s life was like a bumper harvest: full, abundant, and overflowing. Jesus said: “I came that they might have life, and have it abundantly” - that is, above and beyond. Though seemingly cut short from our perspective, it is hard for me to think of Mike’s life as anything less than abundant! For me, in my 40 years of ministry - Mike was one of the most naturally gifted, Spirit-filled leaders I have ever had the privilege to know and work with. Top tier, bearing fruit 30, 60 and 100 fold. Prophetic in his ability to speak God’s truth and words of life into his relationships including Mike loved golf. He loved a tasty shared meal! No grass grew under Mike’s feet - he was a man of bold action. Mike was a man of action - building bridges between people, then mobilizing them to connect to a larger life purpose. How many times did I hear Mike say: “Yes… YES! Yes, let’s go! Yes, we can make that work.” He truly a man of faith. A man of hope, and a man of love. Mike was fearless with strangers; he could and did talk to anyone, anywhere, about anything! Mike wielded an extraordinary ability to bring people together and to draw others out. Mike invested in me, strengthened me, and sharpened me. Mike loved his family. Jill, he loved you. The way he tenderly spoke of you, of your partnership. I remember as the two of you were getting married, Mike shared with me some advice he got from your dad, Jill. It was along the lines of: “Don’t cage her in. She needs to be free to fly!” Mike took that advice to heart. He loved you. Tanner, Noah, and Zoe - he loved each of you very much. After we moved to Plano in 2021, Mike would regularly stay at our home when he was visiting clients in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. We would rise early and go for prayer walks around our neighborhood lake - dreaming about future opportunities, updating on our wives and kids, then praying together - asking God to do the things in our relationships that only he could do. I loved Mike like a brother, and I will miss him dearly. Well done, Mike! You leave behind a rich legacy of faith and friendship. Oh, Lord God. Today we offer up our praise and thanksgiving for the life of your servant, Mike Burns. What a legacy of joy, faith and servanthood he leaves behind. I can picture Mike standing next to you, Jesus, savoring your presence and hearing you say, “Well done! Good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your master.” I wonder what Mike would say in return…. Perhaps he would echo the words of your apostle Paul, who proclaimed: “The time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, has awarded to me on this day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.” Amen
