There was nothing that Mike loved more than his family. He is survived by his wife Deborah, her Mom Norma, and his two sons, Sam and Jake. Mike was a passionate man who cared for those around him; some would say larger than life. He influenced many lives through work, his coaching, always pushing people to strive farther and reach their new personal best. Whether, through basketball, track, football or hockey, Mike was always there ready to give advice and motivation. As a graduate of Milliken University in Illinois, Mike used his Welding Engineering degree for over 36 years in Virginia, Maine and now Florida. Shipbuilding was his passion; his detailed knowledge of codes, specs, rules and regulations was unprecedented. Mike also served on several committees, gave speeches and published numerous articles. His most recent position at The American Welding Society gave him so much pleasure knowing he could advance the Welding industry even more. Mike coached 100's of athletes in his time. In his younger days, he coached Special Olympians and served administratively at the local, area and state level. A job change led him to Maine but Mike couldn't give up coaching. Whether it was football, basketball or track and field at Mt. Ararat High School, he just loved working with kids! Mike enjoyed his scotch, his fishing, and his new pool! As a St. Louis fan, some sport was always on... So my friends, cast a line, take a swim, and raise a glass to Mike.

To Mike's Family -- My deepest sympathy on the loss of your loved one. I was Mike's eighth grade Social Studies teacher and remember him fondly . . . Such a nice, quiet young man. He was a very good, attentive student. Keep the good memories so he will always be alive in your hearts. Sincerely, Carolyn Kessinger Pickett

Mike had this amazing ability to break through people's defenses. When you first met him, it was as if you had been friends your whole life, and no matter how tough your day was, you couldn't help but laugh and smile when talking to him. Condolences and prayers to your family. You will be missed, but not forgotten. You'll live in the many lives you touched and the documents you gave so much time and energy to.

I really got to know Mike when we attended the Welding Summit for AWS. One morning, we had breakfast together and had a wonderful conversation. He talked about his move to Miami and the weather, his wife and children, his hobbies. He also cracked a lot of jokes. He was such a funny, smart, honest guy and will be missed greatly.

Mike, you will be sorely missed. You made a great impact in the short time you were with AWS and I recall fondly working with you on committees beforehand. My condolences to your family. RIP MIke
