It started with the voice. Waiting for a business meeting to begin, many, many years ago, I heard the voice call us to order. I was immediately intrigued. Michael and I shared many wonderful times together, not least of which is our wonderful son, Jay. We introduced each other to many things--he and I shared a great love of music of a very eclectic sort. We loved movies, and going out to eat, Indian food and ice cream. Michael was my love and my partner. We experienced many things together which helped each of us grow. In the last few years, Michael and I became really good friends again--this is what I keep in my memory and will cherish forever. I miss him every day (especially because I could really make him laugh, which was a glorious sound). Thank you all for your comments and memories--this will be comforting as time passes. Michael loved you all and I am glad that you felt that from him. Rest easy, my friend, my co-parent, my partner. You will always be missed.

A birthday past.

My dear friend Michael, how I miss you! You are still my first thought when I wake up every day. I miss you with all my heart. And yet, you are all around me all the time! Your Buddha sits on my desk, your mala is in my meditation room, and your pictures smile at me every day. When an obsure song pops into my head, I know you sent it. When I hug your picture to my chest and feel an incredible warmth and sense of peace wash over me, I know that is you too! Thank you for being the best friend I have ever had. Your laugh, your smile, your warm heart, and your kindness will never be forgotten. There are so many wonderful memories of our friendship that bring me comfort and joy. I love you Michael, and I have no doubt I will see you again!

Ever since I was 5 years old and having playdates with Jay, Mr. Alston would always address me as “young lady”, and it made me feel so important. “Would you like a snack, young lady?” “How is school, young lady?” It made me feel mature (don’t ask me why - I was a strange kid). Despite him being a man of few words, I’ll always remember the respect and kindness he showed me from such a young age.

Michael was a unique individual; all who knew him would attest to that. I look forward to knowing even more about him through those of you who knew of his many selves--the philosopher, politico, social observer, economist (which I believe was his major in college), questioner, project manager, and many other traits by those who knew him in the early days. I knew Micheal in more recent times, and my contribution will speak to him as a conversationalist and a foodie, Now, Michael was not a foodie, but ours was a routine to get together every Friday to watch golf. Michael would (uncharacteristically) go to the trouble of cooking me lunch--a complete meal like fried fish, veggies, baked potato, and dessert. Just like him to go beyond the call of duty. During another period, our practice on those Fridays was to go to lunch at a favorite restaurant. Now, I am not a talker (just ask Julie), but we would get into these long, varied conversations, solving all of the problems of the world. Michael would keep asking questions until the restaurant had to ask us to finish up and pay our bill. Michael would always insist on paying, as always was the case when out to dinner with Julie and myself--generous almost to a fault. But, that was Michael. Please tell us more (you to there), and thank you to Jay for creating this opportunity to tell Michael's story.

Uncle Mike saved me from Ska and the horrible resurgence of Swing music in the 90's. He gave me cd's of Slayer, Bad Brains, Butthole Surfers, and Ministry. The homie set me on the right path and, through his divine curation, I was saved.
