To my loving nephews Chiranjeev Sriram, Chiranjeev Kumar and niece Sowbagyawati Lakshmi (Inky). This is my memory of your mother. It was 70 years ago, when I saw Madhuram Mami for the first time. She was bedecked as a bride with jewels and silk saree worn in a madisaar. She was to be married to my maternal uncle Appu Mama. The marriage went off with all fanfare. I had come to attend the marriage in Madras with my parents. I was 7+ years then. I enjoyed the function and returned to Bombay, which was my original place. A few weeks later, your mother came along with your father to Bombay, where he was employed. It was those days where I observed your mother as a cheerful and hard-working person. I used to go to their house (office quarters). She would cook me sweets and eatables. She was a very good cook. She would serve me with tasty meals. Your father had several sisters and he attended all their family functions with your mother. She was always there to help physically when there was a calamity in any of her sister-in-law's family. Never a complaint, never a rest, she managed willingly in spite of having five children of her own. She settled in Madras after your father's retirement. She had to tend to her bedridden father-in-law's (a widower) ablutions. She did it with dignity and care. She never showed any aversion to the job. This lasted painfully for several months till the old man's passing. Her personal life was also not devoid of any turmoil which she bore with calmness. She was one those unfortunate people whose sacrifices go unnoticed, but who knew her personally, knew her real worth. I am sure her departed soul will be happy and peaceful in her other world.
