Recuerdos

I still get a tingle working for The Arsenal.

Kenneth John Friar OBE was born on 13 August 1934 in Islington, London — the very borough whose streets would shape his life's purpose. His remarkable journey with Arsenal Football Club began in 1945, when eleven-year-old Ken was kicking a football on Avenell Road outside Highbury's Marble Halls. A tennis ball rolled under a car belonging to Arsenal manager George Allison, and so charmed was Allison by the boy's infectious enthusiasm that he offered him a part-time job as a matchday messenger for half-a-crown a week. What began as a childhood errand became an eight-decade vocation. After completing his studies at Highbury County Grammar School, Ken joined Arsenal full-time in 1950 as a junior in the box office — turning down a competing offer with a stockbroker. He rose steadily through the club's ranks: Assistant Secretary by 1965, Club Secretary in 1973, and Managing Director in 1983. Throughout his tenure he served under managers of every era, navigating the triumphs of George Graham's championship sides and the revolutionary years of Arsène Wenger's reign with the same calm diplomacy and quiet authority he applied to everything. Among his most enduring achievements was his stewardship of Arsenal's move from beloved Highbury to the new Emirates Stadium at Ashburton Grove — a project of immense complexity that opened on time and on budget in July 2006. He also played a pivotal role in staging the Muhammad Ali versus Henry Cooper world title fight at Highbury in 1966, a testament to his creative vision for the club's broader place in public life. In recognition of his extraordinary contribution, Ken received an OBE for Services to Football in 2000 and the Freedom of the Borough of Islington in 2004. In 2011, the northern bridge connecting Emirates Stadium to Arsenal tube station was renamed The Ken Friar Bridge, and a statue of him as a boy chasing a football was unveiled outside the ground he had given his life to. Known throughout the club simply as "Mr Friar" — and to many as "Mr Arsenal" — Ken embodied the institution's values more completely than any title could express. His personal maxim, "Tomorrow's match is always the most important," reflected a man who never looked back. He retired from the board in September 2020 and was appointed Life President. He had been married to Gwendoline Maureen Deacon since 1957; they shared sixty-three years together before Gwen's passing in December 2020. Ken Friar died on 13 October 2026 at the age of 92. He is survived by his two children and by the living legacy of a club he shaped across more than eighty years of devoted, irreplaceable service.

I had the privilege, the honour, to meet him and to spend time with him, to learn from him, and there are people at football clubs who have a role and fulfil it, and others who create an identity, values, and they have a vision to create that future for the football club. That legacy Ken is going to leave, to all of us, to our football club, to everybody that has been close to him, is going to be forever.

Ken would call me every December to wish my family and I a happy Christmas. What a class act he was - the epitomisation of all that Arsenal stands for: Victory Through Togetherness.

He was Mr Arsenal, have no fear about that, he always has been and always will be. The years he had at the club are a testament to his personality and the incredible qualities he had. It takes a special person to work through that many eras. He's rightly honoured here and that should never be forgotten. Ken was a man that spoke little but did a lot, and he did a lot.
