My family and I live on El Camino Real and always walked by Mrs. Horton's house. She would always chat us up when she was outside and we enjoyed our little encounters. We always admired how strong and independent she was. We're so surprised to learn of her passing. We're praying Mrs. Horton is resting in peace, and that the wonderful memories will help her family get through this difficult time.

We developed a true friendship as two Lutherans from New Jersey.Through daily phone calls and visits Jean shared her life with me for 6 of her last years. There were woes about her dirty dishes in the sink, her family's ills, rats getting the precious bird seed, plumbing, phone, washing machine, or computers not working. We laughed over lost items. She was an activist calling community and national representatives frequently. Cards were given to everyone on every occasion with a loving message. Even the Queen of England received a birthday card each year. I loved Jean and miss her every day. Her strong personality and persistent nature will live in my heart ❤️ always.

When I think about Jean and look back at all she has done in her life I think about all the babysitting she did for me. For several years she was always there ready to support me and my four kids. It always amazing me at how calm, cool and collected she was. She made parenting look easy and joyful might I add. Equally important is her way of finding compassion for others. I remember several times where she opened my eyes to another view of how things might be for someone else in a given situation. Like the time one morning many years ago. Before I dropped off my son in the babysitting room at my preschool, UMC, where Jean was the babysitter, I stopped by Call Primrose, a local food bank. Lo and behold I see the guy who works down the street is getting free food. Now this is a guy I don't particularly like mainly because of his snarky attitude and comments where he worked. When I got to the babysitting room I was upset the idea of this rude man taking advantage of Call Primrose's free food and told Jean of this incident. She replied very kindly that we don't really know what is going on with the young man and that we can trust Call Primrose for vetting their clients thoroughly. I expected Jean to side with me but instead she saw another side of the situation and offered compassion. I will never forget this incident and her understanding of others.

Jean lived the music of life with love as her prevailing theme of family, friends, church, and nation. I met Jean through her knitting of afghans. I assembled the knitted strips for her which she then gifted to family and friends.
